Okay, so Valve dropping the Steam Machine was a bit of a shocker, right? Everyone’s been wondering how much these things are gonna cost and why they picked the parts they did. I was checking out an interview with Yazan Aldehayyat, one of Valve’s hardware engineers, on the Tested YouTube channel, and he spilled some details about how they approached building it.
According to Aldehayyat, the Steam Machine’s components were selected based on data from Valve’s Steam Hardware Surveys. By analyzing what kinds of computers most PC gamers use, Valve aimed to create a machine that would deliver comparable performance. Aldehayyat states that the Steam Machine performs as well as, or better than, 70% of the gaming PCs reflected in those surveys.
Aldehayyat explained that they focused on two key things. First, they wanted the device to be powerful enough to run any game from your Steam library without issues. They aimed for a smooth, worry-free experience, so users wouldn’t have to wonder if the device could handle their favorite games. Ensuring sufficient performance was their primary goal.
Valve also focused on making the Steam Machine affordable. They aimed to provide a good value by offering a mid-range gaming PC that could also be a great first PC for new gamers.
We also examined the Steam Hardware Survey to get a sense of the performance level of typical home computers. The Steam Deck performs as well as or better than 70% of the machines people currently have at home, which helps us understand the level of performance we’re aiming for.
Aldehayyat detailed the powerful components inside the Steam Machine. It will feature a custom AMD processor (CPU) with 6 cores and 12 threads, capable of speeds up to 4.8 GHz, alongside a separate custom AMD graphics card (GPU) with 28 compute units and 8 GB of dedicated video memory. The GPU can reach speeds of up to 2.45 GHz.
The chip isn’t completely custom-built; it uses standard silicon. However, we collaborated closely with AMD to optimize the software and firmware specifically for SteamOS. We didn’t modify the chip itself, but we did customize the software components, and we’re very pleased with how much performance we were able to achieve.
Valve announced the Steam Machine, a new gaming system, along with the Steam Frame VR headset and a redesigned Steam Controller. It’s expected to be available in early 2026, and Valve aims to price it competitively with the cost of building a similar gaming PC.
