A popular PC game that usually costs $10 is currently available for free on Steam for a limited time. While the game was released in 2012 and might not have the latest graphics, it’s never been offered for free before. You can grab it now until March 16th! Plus, it’s verified to work great on the Steam Deck, so you can play it on your computer or handheld device.
For the next week, PC gamers with a Steam account can download the adventure game Deponia for free. This is the first game in a four-part series that originally launched in 2012, with sequels released in 2013 and 2016. The four games all tell one continuous story. While a new game, Surviving Deponia, is in development as a separate, spin-off title, this is a great chance to experience the original series after a ten-year hiatus.
2012 Adventure Game
When Deponia was first released, it received a respectable score of 74 on Metacritic, which was a good result for its publisher given the game’s size and ambition. Player reviews on Steam largely agree. With over 2,900 reviews, Deponia currently has a 77% approval rating, earning it a “Mostly Positive” designation – the fourth-highest rating available on Steam.
This adventure game puts you in the role of Rufus, a man born into poverty and living amongst a vast junkyard. He longs to reach the luxurious city floating in the clouds above. His chance arrives when a wealthy woman named Goal falls from the sky and needs his assistance to return home.
Here’s some background on the game’s story: most players will finish it in around eight to ten hours, though that can vary based on how they play, their familiarity with similar games, and how much of the game they aim to complete.
While Deponia is available on various platforms like mobile, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, it’s currently free to play only on Steam. The reason for this limited-time offer on Steam specifically hasn’t been publicly shared, but it likely connects to the upcoming release of Surviving Deponia, which will be exclusive to PC.
