PC and Steam players are in for a treat – two classic games are currently being given away for free! What’s great is that this is a completely straightforward offer with no hidden costs or in-game purchases. Since these games used to cost money, it’s a really unexpected bonus. It’s currently unknown if they’ll work with the Steam Deck.
PC gamers on Steam can now download Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02 at no cost. These releases follow other Backyard games – Backyard Baseball ’97, Backyard Baseball ’01, Backyard Soccer ’98, and Backyard Football ’99 – which are each priced at $10. It’s currently unclear why these two newest games are being offered for free.
Backyard Basketball ’01
Originally launched in 2001 by Humongous Entertainment, Backyard Basketball ’01 kicked off the popular Backyard Sports series. This updated version has been developed by Mega Cat Studios and published by Playground Productions, and it currently has a perfect 100% rating on Steam. While fans of the original game will notice one missing player – Kevin Garnett – everyone else from the classic roster, including all the pro players and neighborhood kids, is included.
Backyard Hockey ’02
Originally released in 2002, Backyard Hockey ’02 has been updated by the same team that worked on Backyard Basketball ’01. This game was the first hockey title in the Backyard Sports series. However, like its basketball counterpart, it has limited licensing and suffers from performance issues, both of which have negatively impacted user reviews.
Unlike Backyard Baseball, and to a lesser degree Backyard Soccer and Backyard Football, Backyard Basketball and especially Backyard Hockey weren’t as popular. This, combined with some missing features, particularly in Backyard Hockey, could be why they’re currently free. While it might be a temporary offer, that hasn’t been announced. It’s more likely these games are meant to introduce players to the series and encourage them to buy the other titles, as well as promote the developers’ newest game.
