Steam’s Controversial Dino Crisis Port Makes 1 Thing Glaringly Obvious

2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for horror fans, extending beyond just movies and TV shows. On February 12th, two popular survival horror games became available on Steam, though not quite as fans of the Dino Crisis series expected.

It’s not really important that gamers disagree about which Dino Crisis game is best. The fact that they’re still debating it actually shows there’s a continued interest in the series, and perhaps a desire for a complete remake or reboot.

Dino Crisis Is One of the Best Horror Franchises of the ’90s

Created by the talented team behind the popular Resident Evil series (officially Capcom Production Studio 4), this game will excite both gamers and horror enthusiasts. Players take on the role of Regina, a member of a highly skilled special operations team.

Regina’s mission is to capture Doctor Edward Kirk, a famous scientist everyone thought had died, who unexpectedly reappears leading a secret weapons program. When Regina and her team arrive at the remote Ibis Island, they quickly find themselves under attack by ferocious dinosaurs, including a massive Tyrannosaurus Rex and agile Velociraptors.

When Dino Crisis first came out, many people immediately compared it to Resident Evil with dinosaurs. However, it quickly became clear that Dino Crisis was unique enough to be its own game. Both critics and players generally loved it when it was released.

Currently, Dino Crisis for the Dreamcast has a Metascore of 74 out of 100 on Metacritic, and users give it an 8.5/10 rating – and it’s easy to see why. While the game can be a bit frustrating with its puzzles and doesn’t always have a lot of action, its suspenseful atmosphere and realistic dinosaur behavior more than compensate for these issues.

This success has helped keep the Dino Crisis franchise alive for over 20 years since its last game. Since its release, Dino Crisis has sold millions of copies on various platforms, including 2.4 million copies on the original PlayStation.

Several sequels followed the original Dino Crisis. In 2002, players saw both Dino Crisis 2 and a spin-off light gun game called Dino Stalker. Then, in 2003, Dino Crisis 3 and a first-person shooter titled Dino Crisis: Dungeon in Chaos were released on the Xbox.

Steam’s Dino Crisis Success Proves the Franchise Needs a Comeback

While Dino Crisis 2 received widespread praise and sold over a million copies on PlayStation, later installments – Dino Stalker, Dino Crisis: Dungeon in Chaos, and Dino Crisis 3 – were generally considered average. Despite the series being put on hold after Dino Crisis 3, fans continue to request new games in the franchise, in any format.

Regina and her memorable look have been featured in games like Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Namco x Capcom. Dino Crisis even inspired a popular, though somewhat different and hard-to-find, six-issue comic book series. The original two games were re-released together in 2025 as the Dino Crisis Bundle, and were also added to a gaming platform’s program dedicated to preserving classic titles that same year.

So, I was super excited when Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 finally hit Steam on February 12, 2026! It’s awesome to see these classics available, but honestly, the reaction has been kind of a letdown. A lot of us were pretty annoyed to find out they’re using really strict DRM, and the DRM files are actually bigger than the games themselves! It’s a bummer because it feels like they didn’t really treat the fans with respect when porting these beloved titles.

Although the recent GOG releases sparked some debate, the strong reaction shows there’s still a lot of interest in the Dino Crisis series. The game has quietly disappeared from the spotlight, but that might actually mean it’s the right time for a Dino Crisis movie or TV show.

Dino Crisis Would Shine in Live-Action

For a long time, turning popular video games into big-budget movies and shows was a risky move for studios. But with the success of series like Fallout, it’s now clear they’ve learned how to successfully bring those worlds to life on screen.

Plus, we’re seeing a lot of excitement for similar ideas, like the Jurassic World movies and the MonsterVerse films. Considering everything, now is a great time to revisit Dino Crisis, even if it doesn’t seem likely to happen.

This demonstrates how open major film studios are to tackling projects once thought unfilmable. It’s almost surprising that Dino Crisis hasn’t been adapted into a movie yet, considering its enduring popularity and cultural impact.

Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait much longer for a new Dino Crisis project. It could be a brand new video game or even a movie or TV show, but interest in the franchise remains strong.
