A highly anticipated erotic horror film from 2025 will soon be available on Netflix. The movie, which hasn’t gotten much attention yet, finally has a release date on the streaming platform.
Okay, horror hounds, listen up! If you’re looking for something truly wild, mark your calendars because Bone Lake, which everyone’s been calling the most outrageous horror movie of the year, is hitting Netflix on January 15th. I’ve heard it’s not for the faint of heart, but if you like your horror with a side of…well, let’s just say intensity, you’re going to want to check this one out. Less than a week to go!
The film, directed by , features a screenplay by Joshua Friedlander. It follows Sage and Diego, a couple whose romantic weekend trip takes an unexpected turn when they discover another couple is already staying at their rental house. They decide to share the space with Will and Cin (played by Alex Roe and Andra Nechita), but their vacation quickly devolves into a shocking and sexually-charged horror experience.
The film Bone Lake premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2024, receiving mostly excellent reviews. It then had a limited release in theaters starting in October 2025, earning over $1.4 million.
Okay, so Bone Lake is really turning heads with critics – a lot of them are already calling it a modern erotic thriller classic! As of today, Rotten Tomatoes shows it’s getting amazing reviews, averaging out to a really high score across 96 critics. But here’s the weird part: audiences? Not so much. The ‘Popcornmeter’ – that’s Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score – is only around 60%, based on over 100 verified ratings. It’s a pretty big disconnect between what the pros think and what regular moviegoers are feeling.
How Bone Lake Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan Approached the Film’s Overtly Tense Subject Matter
Before the film Bone Lake came out in theaters, director Mercedes Bryce Morgan talked about how the movie constantly switches between moments of sexual tension and feelings of fear. She explained that she deliberately created very realistic characters, because the basic idea behind the film is quite unusual.
As the erotic thriller unfolds, it transitions from building suspense to graphic violence,” Morgan explained. “The interplay of potential intimacy and the ever-present danger of death enables this change in tone. The visual style also evolves, becoming more intense and vivid as the story moves forward.
Morgan discussed the themes in Bone Lake, explaining how the story often mixes attraction and danger. They enjoy exploring this tension, combining sex and violence to tap into a fundamental human curiosity: are we looking at a potential partner or a potential threat? This duality, Morgan believes, is a powerful motivator, especially in horror, and can determine whether an audience connects with a story or not. They illustrate this point by asking whether seeing a character running naked is exciting or frightening.
Bone Lake will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning Jan. 15.
