Stephen Colbert ended 2025 by revealing the biggest takeaway from the year on CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast.
During a conversation with Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper, Stephen Colbert was asked what he’d learned over the past year. He jokingly replied, “Don’t trust billionaires.” He then explained, laughing, that they didn’t earn their wealth by chance; they accumulated it through specific means.
Following Stephen Colbert’s well-known disagreements with both President Donald Trump and CBS, Cohen raised this question. Last year, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, after more than ten years on the air, when Colbert’s contract expires.
The TV host believed the cancellation of his show was probably due to his strained relationship with the U.S. President, who is a billionaire. But CBS stated that politics weren’t a factor. The network explained they weren’t renewing the show because it wasn’t profitable and viewership numbers were low.
When CBS announced the end of The Late Show in July 2025, it caused a stir in Hollywood. While CBS stated the decision was financially driven, many questioned that explanation, suggesting other factors were at play. Critics accused the network of giving in to pressure from the newly elected President Trump, given Stephen Colbert’s history of being a vocal critic of his.
After the announcement, Stephen Colbert received widespread support from fellow comedians and fans. David Letterman, the original host of The Late Show for over 20 years, publicly disagreed with CBS’s decision, stating it stemmed from fear, not money problems. He criticized the network for prioritizing avoiding political controversy over allowing its talent to express their opinions.
I found the film’s commentary on press freedom really unsettling. It portrays a world where those in power actively dismiss the importance of a free press and free speech – almost as if these ideas are outdated. It’s a chilling depiction of what happens when people in charge don’t want anyone questioning them, and they’re willing to disregard fundamental rights to maintain control. The movie really drives home the point that protecting these freedoms isn’t just a historical concern, it’s a constant battle.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will conclude in May 2026 on CBS.
