Stephen Fry was unusually open and honest on tonight’s episode of The Assembly, answering questions that other interviews have always avoided.
Stephen Fry is the first of six celebrities participating in a unique interview series. In each episode, a panel of interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent, or have learning disabilities will ask the celebrities anything they want – and no subject is off-limits.
During tonight’s episode, which aired on April 8th, Fry answered questions about his life and career. Early in the show, a guest directly asked him about his past drug use, specifically how much money he’d spent on cocaine. Fry admitted he had been addicted and estimated he’d wasted thousands of pounds, saying he used to spend around £60 per gram during that time.
Stephen Fry has publicly discussed his struggle with cocaine addiction during the 1980s and 1990s, detailing his experiences in his 2014 memoir, ‘More Fool Me’.
I wouldn’t advise anyone to do that, but it’s important to understand why people feel the need to. Instead of simply criticizing them, we should try to find a more constructive solution. Ultimately, getting results is more important than being correct – the goal is to solve the problem effectively.

Someone asked me what I tell people who have a problem with age gap relationships, and honestly, it brought up my relationship with my husband, Elliott Spencer – we have a 30-year age difference. It’s a question I get sometimes, and it’s always interesting to think about how to respond.
I feel bad for them. I don’t understand why they feel that way about things,” he explained. “In a relationship, the only important thing is love – if you feel it, that’s all that matters.
He addressed common ideas about who held the power in his marriage, explaining to the group, “I often tell people that Elliot really calls the shots in our relationship,” and adding that Spencer is the one who usually makes the important decisions.
Next on the show, after tonight’s guest, we’ll be joined by Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister of Scotland, followed by the comedian Sir Lenny Henry, actress Anna Maxwell Martin, and the rapper Aitch, who’s also known from his appearance on ‘I’m A Celebrity’ and has won a BRIT Award.
Viewers can also look forward to one more celebrity being added to the already impressive lineup – the sixth and final cast member will be revealed soon.
The show’s first season, starring Danny Dyer, David Tennant, Jade Thirlwall, and Gary Lineker, was highly praised by critics.
The Assembly continues on Friday 10 April at 10:05pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
