For almost fifty years, Stephen King stories have been consistently adapted for film and television, and the 2020s have proven that trend isn’t slowing down. Recent adaptations like Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Boogeyman, The Life of Chuck, ‘Salem’s Lot, The Monkey, The Outsider, The Stand, and The Institute have all met with different degrees of success. Next month, Edgar Wright, Glen Powell, and Paramount Pictures aim for similar results with a new take on The Running Man. However, King is currently making the biggest impact on television, with three movies and a new show attracting both new and longtime fans.
The movie The Long Walk was considered impossible to adapt into a film, but it received excellent reviews and earned almost three times its $20 million production cost. You can now rent it online, and while official viewership numbers aren’t available yet, given the success of other Stephen King adaptations on HBO Max, it’s likely performing very well.
Which King Movies (& Show) Are Dominating HBO Max?
According to FlixPatrol, the new series It: Welcome to Derry quickly became the most popular show on HBO Max, reaching number one on October 29, 2025. Although the show has received mixed reactions from fans, most have enjoyed it. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 76% rating, and audiences scored it at 81%. Created by Andy Muschietti, who directed the It and It Chapter Two films, and starring Taylour Paige of The Toxic Avenger, the series releases new episodes each week until December 14th, promising continued high viewership for HBO Max for the next month and a half.
With Andy Muschietti directing the first four episodes of Welcome to Derry, his It films are currently popular on HBO Max. It: Chapter One is number one, while It and It: Chapter Two are in second and third place, respectively. The top ten also includes movies like Superman and The Substance.
Currently, Weapons is the most popular movie overall, but It is performing best in France and Turkey. It: Welcome to Derry is the leading show everywhere except for Bangladesh, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Norway, Poland, Singapore, and Sweden.
The series Welcome to Derry explores the origins of Pennywise the Dancing Clown and, more importantly, reveals why the town of Derry is such a terrifying place. Be prepared for disturbing imagery, including deformed babies, severed fingers, and even a person transformed into a screaming lampshade.
