As a huge Stephen King fan, it’s amazing how many of his stories have been made into movies and shows! Everyone knows he’s the master of horror, but it’s cool that his sci-fi and fantasy stuff gets adapted too. There’s one adaptation in particular that didn’t get a lot of love from critics or become a blockbuster, but honestly, I think it’s really good and totally underrated. And the best part? You can now watch the 2017 film The Dark Tower for free on Tubi. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Taylor, the movie wasn’t a big hit with critics or at the box office. However, many fans enjoyed it, and even Stephen King thought it was a solid film. Though a TV series is in the works, the movie is still worth watching, especially for fans of dark fantasy and Stephen King’s work.
The Dark Tower Movie Is Flawed, But It’s Action-Packed With Strong Performances
Let’s be upfront: the Dark Tower movie isn’t a flawless adaptation, and it wouldn’t have been realistic to expect one. The source material is massive – eight novels, a novella, and even a children’s book – and that’s before you consider how other Stephen King novels connect to and expand the Dark Tower universe. It’s a hugely complex story that’s difficult to fit into a single movie. However, despite the challenge of condensing such a large story, the 2017 film does a commendable job. It’s very approachable for viewers who aren’t familiar with Stephen King or haven’t read the books. While the movie does cut out a lot of details from the source material, it successfully captures the core of the story.
The acting is a strong point of the movie, with Idris Elba delivering a particularly impressive performance as Roland Deschain – many believe he was perfectly suited for the role. Matthew McConaughey is also excellent as the villain, Walter Paddick, and while he isn’t featured as much as some might like, he embodies the character with charisma. The film maintains a good pace thanks to the strong performances and frequent action, which is important given the complexity of the Dark Tower story and its expansive world. This brisk pacing helps the condensed story work better than it initially did with audiences in 2017. With the film now available for free streaming, it’s possible more people will give it another look, especially with a new television adaptation from Mike Flanagan on the horizon.
