Stephen King’s Unforgettable Horror Masterpiece Adaptation Is Now on Prime Video Along With Its Remake

Stephen King truly deserves his title as the ‘King of Horror.’ For over 50 years, he’s transformed the genre with unforgettable and frightening stories that place the supernatural in everyday settings, influencing horror in film and television. He’s become one of the most frequently adapted authors ever, and with even more projects on the way, Prime Video is now streaming a standout adaptation of one of his most famous works – alongside its recent remake – starting this March.

When people think of classic horror movies, Carrie always comes to mind. Originally a 1974 novel by Stephen King, the story follows Carrie White, a shy and isolated teenager who discovers she has telekinetic powers. She ultimately uses those powers to get revenge on those who have wronged her. The original 1976 film, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek, and the 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz, are now both available to stream on Prime Video, starting March 1st. Both movies depict Carrie’s life as a bullied and abused teenager, and how that trauma leads to a terrifying and supernatural act of revenge.

Carrie Remains a Quintessential Classic of the Horror Genre

As a huge horror fan, I always come back to Carrie. Stephen King’s novel wasn’t just a breakthrough for him – the 1974 book and Brian De Palma’s movie really changed everything. Before Carrie, horror was often seen as cheap thrills, but this adaptation proved it could be serious art and a massive hit at the same time. What I love is how the movie connected the supernatural stuff to the very real struggles of being a teenager – the bullying, the feeling of being alone. It really created a whole new type of horror that focused on growing up. De Palma and Sissy Spacek absolutely nailed the feeling of Carrie’s isolation and trauma, and the way he used things like split-screen and slow motion built up incredible tension. Plus, it gave us some of the most famous scenes in horror history – that prom scene is unforgettable!

Even after 50 years, the film Carrie is still considered one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work, and consistently receives high praise. With a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the second highest-rated King movie, surpassed only by Chain Reaction. Carrie truly set the stage for many horror films that followed, including its own sequels and a less successful remake from 2013. The story continues to inspire new interpretations, as a reimagining is currently in development as a miniseries on Prime Video, helmed by frequent Stephen King collaborator Mike Flanagan.

What’s New on Prime Video?

On March 1st, Prime Video added a bunch of new movies and shows, including the 1976 and 2013 versions of Carrie. Prime members can now watch films like Hannibal, Super 8, Twelve Monkeys, and all four Shrek movies, too.
