You may have to wait until Stephenie Meyer is long gone to spend more time in Forks.
Twenty years after releasing the first book in her popular *Twilight* series, the author shared whether she intends to write any follow-up novels to the fantasy romance.
In a recent interview with *Good Morning America*, Stephenie Meyer revealed she has ideas for future stories, but isn’t sure if she’ll ever have the chance to write them.
Even if she doesn’t publish them, the author, age 51, has assured fans they will still learn the conclusion of Bella, Edward, and Jacob’s story.
She said she wanted her notes shared after she passed away, if she didn’t have a chance to do it herself.
As a lifestyle expert, I know fans are eager for more from the *Twilight* saga, and while we might have to be patient for any continuations, I can assure you that Stephenie Meyer feels incredibly secure about the enduring love story at the heart of it all. She truly believes in the connection between these characters.
She explained that, in her mind, Bella and Edward’s story hasn’t really finished, and she still imagines what happens to them after the end of *Breaking Dawn*. She feels their adventures continue beyond the book’s final page.
Meyer believes she knows why the *Twilight* series-the movies of which launched Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner to fame-continues to have such a dedicated fanbase.
She described capturing a glimpse of the feeling of falling in love. She explained that it was a love destined to fail, and she found that inherently thrilling.
As for why she thinks readers connected with the character of Bella?
Many book heroines are portrayed as adventurous and skilled fighters, but Bella is different. She’s a quiet, bookish character, and we don’t often see that type of personality as the main hero of a story.
And while the author resonates with Bella, she noted the teen was not based on her.
I think we’d get along as friends,” she said. “We both tend to be introverted and shy, and I enjoy reading, too. But we definitely see things differently – her opinions are often the opposite of mine.
Interestingly, Bella and Meyer are very different people – Bella even confessed she likely wouldn’t have picked a vampire if she’d had the choice.
She admitted she was likely on ‘Team Werewolf.’ She explained that she married her childhood friend, someone she’d known since she was four years old, and that kind of close, familiar relationship suited her best.

When initially developing the screenplay for *Twilight*, writer Mark Lord worried that the story wouldn’t appeal to male viewers. He explained on the *Big Hit Show* podcast in January 2022 that they aimed to reimagine *Romeo and Juliet* with a vampire twist, creating a more action-packed plot. The goal was to add enough excitement to attract a broader audience, as they feared too much focus on romance would alienate male viewers.
Director Catherine Hardwicke wasn’t happy with the initial script, so she asked the writers to completely change direction. She remembered that the first draft was drastically different from the book, featuring Bella as a sporty character being pursued by the FBI on a jet ski.
Originally, both Paramount and MTV had the rights to make a movie based on Twilight, but the first script was very different from the book. Director Hardwicke told CinemaBlend she didn’t like it because it strayed too far from the source material. After three years, Paramount gave up the rights, and Summit Entertainment, a smaller studio at the time, quickly acquired them.
When adapting her book for the screen, author Stephenie Meyer had a few firm rules. She specifically didn’t want any typical vampire clichés included and insisted that the line, “so the lion fell in love with the lamb,” be used in the movie.
Stephenie Meyer wasn’t afraid to speak up during the making of the *Twilight* films. She requested a change in actors, replacing the original Emmett with Kellan Lutz, and also asked the filmmakers to make Bella and Edward’s first kiss less intense. Meyer told *Entertainment Weekly* that while it was difficult to assert herself, she’s happy she did and doesn’t believe she offended anyone in the process – people still seem to like her!
According to Erik Feig, who was Summit’s Head of Production at the time, Stephenie Meyer was very specific about her vampires – she didn’t want them to have visible fangs. Feig remembered a clause in the contract stating that no actor playing a vampire could have canine teeth longer than a typical human’s, and he said he particularly appreciated that detail, as he shared on the Spotify podcast *The Big Hit Show*.
Several actresses who would later become major stars – including future leads of their own franchises – auditioned for the role of Bella Swan. These included Emily Browning (Stephenie Meyer’s initial top pick), Michelle Trachtenberg, Lily Collins, and Jennifer Lawrence.
In a later interview on *The Howard Stern Show*, Jennifer Lawrence described her *Twilight* audition as bizarre. She explained that she only received a few pages of script and was simply told to ‘act like a monkey.’ She was surprised and amused when the movie came out, exclaiming, ‘Wow, that’s something!’
After actor Emile Hirsch – who worked with Kristen Stewart in *Into the Wild* and director Hardwicke in *Lords of Dogtown* – suggested her, the director decided Kristen Stewart was perfect for the part.
While watching Kristen Stewart in *Into the Wild*, director Catherine Hardwicke noticed a strong sense of yearning and attraction in her portrayal of the character, which perfectly matched what she’d envisioned while reading the book. Hardwicke felt Stewart brilliantly captured the character’s hidden, but powerful, desires, and knew immediately she was the right choice for the role.
At first, the actress wasn’t interested in the project after hearing a summary of the story. However, after meeting with the director, Hardwicke, and discussing the script with her, Stewart decided she wanted to be involved.
As a lifestyle expert, I always find the casting stories behind big movies fascinating! Did you know over 5,000 actors auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen? It’s incredible! Names like Dave Franco and Dustin Milligan (you might recognize him from *Schitt’s Creek*) were all in the running. Jamie Campbell Bower even auditioned, though he later played Caius in the sequels. Interestingly, Stephenie Meyer actually wanted Henry Cavill for the part, but he was deemed too old by the time filming started. They actually considered him for the role of Carlisle, the Cullen family’s father figure, instead! Michael Welch, who eventually played Michael Newton, was another actor who tried out for Edward.
The final four actors considered for the lead role were Robert Pattinson, Ben Barnes, Shiloh Fernandez, and Jackson Rathbone (who later played Jasper Cullen). Hardwicke invited them all to her home in California to screen test with Kristen Stewart.
The audition for the chemistry read, famously featuring a scene in a meadow, was performed by Stewart and Pattinson on director Hardwicke’s bed. Hardwicke remembered Pattinson being very enthusiastic before the kiss, describing the moment as “electric.” Pattinson later admitted to taking half a Valium beforehand to calm his nerves during the crucial audition.
Even after seeing four actors audition, director Catherine Hardwicke hadn’t made a decision, but Kristen Stewart immediately knew which one should play Edward. She told *Vanity Fair* she thought it was a clear and perfect fit, saying, “It was such an obvious choice!”
Before the movie *Twilight* launched his career, Robert Pattinson almost gave up acting. He’d faced a lot of unsuccessful auditions after appearing in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, and felt discouraged. As he later shared on *Today*, he was ready to quit because he wasn’t getting hired, but realized it wasn’t really quitting when you’re not even getting opportunities – it was simply accepting what seemed like his fate.
Tyler Posey, who later became famous as the lead in MTV’s *Teen Wolf*, shared that he actually auditioned for the part of Jacob Black in the first *Twilight* movie. He said he competed with his friend Taylor Lautner for the role, and Taylor ultimately got it. Posey jokingly told MTV, “Taylor beat me out! Congrats, man, that was an awesome role… I hate you!”
Lucy Hale, who later starred in *Pretty Little Liars*, also auditioned for *Twilight*. She hoped to play Alice Cullen, but also tried out for the roles of Jane in *New Moon* and Leah Clearwater in *Eclipse*. She shared with J-14 that she was a big fan of the books and really wanted to be involved in the first movie.
Cam Gigandet initially auditioned for the role of James, the villain, but was later asked to read for Emmett Cullen. He explained to MTV that he had to ask if there were any roles available for him. He really connected with Emmett, but still wanted to play James. After a week, he got the news that he’d been cast as James.
Briga Meyer had a small, uncredited role in the first Twilight movie, appearing as a diner patron during a scene with Bella and her father, Charlie (Billy Burke). She also made a cameo appearance as a guest at Bella and Edward’s wedding in *Breaking Dawn: Part 1*, alongside screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, co-producer Bill Bannerman, and producer Wyck Godfrey.
During the very first take on the first day of filming, Robert Pattinson pulled a muscle in his glute, explaining that his body wasn’t ready for the physical demands. This injury caused complications with the film’s insurance and required him to undergo some physical therapy.
After the huge success of Twilight‘s opening night, the announcement of New Moon surprised fans – Taylor Lautner’s name wasn’t on the cast list. This wasn’t a mistake; the studio was considering if the then 16-year-old actor could convincingly portray the character after his physical transformation into a werewolf.
Director Chris Weitz told Reuters that people questioned casting the actor because he didn’t appear much in the first film and is described as being 6’5″ in the second book. Considering the actor is actually 5’9″, these were valid concerns the filmmakers had to address.
Originally, they considered Michael Copon, known for his roles in *The Scorpion King 2* and *One Tree Hill*, to replace Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. Copon explained to MTV that he had no personal issues with Lautner, praising his talent. However, he understood the story required the character of Jacob to mature, and a change in actor would have facilitated that progression.
Taylor Lautner was dedicated to his role as Jacob and immediately began a rigorous training plan after finishing the first movie. He committed to a strict diet of 4,000 calories a day, eating every two hours, and working out for at least two hours five days a week to build muscle.
I needed to start training immediately; there wasn’t time to waste,” the actor, who was 17 at the time, explained to *Interview* magazine. “As soon as I finished reading *Twilight*, I went home and began a weight-gain program. For *New Moon*, I gained 30 pounds compared to my weight in *Twilight*.
As a huge fan, I loved seeing Taylor Lautner transform for the role of Jacob! But apparently, there was one thing he *really* didn’t enjoy – that wig! He actually told MTV they had a mutual dislike for each other. He said it was a real struggle, and he doesn’t have fond memories of wearing it at all. It’s funny to think something so small could bother him so much, but I can definitely see his point now!
To play Rosalie in the first *Twilight* movie, Nikki Reed initially dyed her hair blonde. However, the process severely damaged her hair, causing it to fall out. She explained to MTV that the initial bleaching took 36 hours, and she had to continue bleaching her hair and scalp frequently. For the rest of the series, she chose to wear wigs to protect her hair.
Kristen Stewart faced more hair challenges during the *Twilight* series. After cutting her hair for the role of Joan Jett in *The Runaways*, she had to wear a noticeable wig for *Eclipse*. Before *Breaking Dawn: Part 1*, she promised fans she’d be using her natural hair, and it was revealed that the studio, Summit, had originally been against her cutting it at all.
She admitted people might not like what she was about to say, but explained that she was offered a lot of unreasonable requests. Speaking to George Lopez in 2010, she said she understood the situation, but wished they’d had a better solution – specifically regarding a wig – though they eventually worked things out and she hoped everything was resolved.
Rachelle Lefevre originally played the vampire villain Victoria, but she was replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard in the movie *Eclipse*. Howard had actually been considered for the role years earlier. Lefevre was upset about the change, but the studio said it was due to scheduling issues.
Levefre expressed her shock at Summit’s choice to replace her in the role, stating she was dedicated to the Twilight series and playing the character Victoria.
Xavier Samuel, a new actor, landed the role of Riley, a supporting character alongside Victoria, in the third film of the series. He was chosen over Channing Tatum and Tom Felton, the star of *Harry Potter*, for the part.
Michael Sheen decided to play Aro, the leader of the Volturi, largely because his daughter, Lily (whose mother is Kate Beckinsale), was a huge fan of the *Twilight* series. He explained to The Daily Record that making his daughter happy was his primary motivation. He also admitted that after reading the books, he genuinely enjoyed them, which was a pleasant surprise.
The team chose Carolina Herrera to design Bella’s wedding dress because of an existing relationship. Costume designer Michael Wilkinson explained to MTV that Carolina Herrera had previously worked with Stephenie Meyer and the two had become friends, leading to a conversation about the dress. Wilkinson acted as a consultant on the design to ensure it fit with the overall look of the film, something they had been discussing for a while.
The costume designer made unique dresses specifically for Bella’s mother and all the other Cullen women.
The biggest worry with her custom-made wedding dress was that it could get damaged – and almost did because of the Oregon weather. They only had two backup copies, which wasn’t much reassurance.
Wilkinson shared with *InStyle* that they narrowly avoided a wardrobe mishap during a shoot. She imagined paint slowly spreading up the dress, but luckily, they filmed the main shot first. By the time they moved in for closer shots, the dress was quickly absorbing the paint, almost like it was soaking it up!
Okay, so how was Bella able to get pregnant by Edward, considering he’s a vampire and she’s human? Stephanie Meyer actually addressed this on her website. She explained that male vampires still produce fluids similar to semen, which contain genetic information and can fertilize a human egg. There’s the answer!
The first cut of Bella and Edward’s wedding night scene originally earned *Breaking Dawn: Part 1* an R-rating. Director Bill Condon had to edit the scene to be less explicit. He explained to *The Hollywood Reporter* that there are specific rules regarding depictions of sexual intercourse.
In 2011, Robert Pattinson jokingly sent fans into a frenzy when he mentioned during a Breaking Dawn press conference that a real priest had performed the wedding scene. He explained that because the priest went through all the proper steps of a traditional ceremony, they were technically married in the eyes of the church, even if not legally.
After Kristen Stewart wore a coat from B.B. Dakota in the first Twilight movie, the company renamed it “the Bella Swan jacket.” Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the films, quickly took legal action, and in 2011, a judge ruled in their favor, protecting the franchise’s branding.
Several actors you might not remember appeared in the *Twilight* films, including Anna Kendrick, Noel Fisher (from *Shameless*), Maggie Grace (known for *Lost*), Lee Pace, Angela Sarafyan (of *Westworld*), and Academy Award winner Rami Malek. Interestingly, Anna Kendrick had actually forgotten she was part of the series, tweeting in 2018, “Holy st, I just remembered I was in *Twilight*!”
Years later, director Catherine Hardwicke told Vulture she didn’t enjoy reading the *Twilight* scripts, bluntly stating they were all terrible. She wasn’t alone in her criticism – director David Slade actually had to apologize for negative comments he made before directing *Eclipse*. He jokingly described his feelings about the series by saying he wouldn’t even consider working on it sober, let alone while intoxicated, and even wished someone would just ‘shoot him’ rather than make him read the scripts, during a radio interview.
Ten-year-old Mackenzie Foy played the important role of Renesmee, the half-vampire, half-human daughter of Bella and Edward, who Jacob ends up bonding with. Everyone involved in making *Breaking Dawn: Part 2* was very careful and protective of the young actress. Director Bill Condor even put out a swear jar on set – it collected over $800! – and the lead actors made a conscious effort to be mindful of their language around her.
Condor shared with EW that the cast was wonderful with her. Rob really stepped into a fatherly role, and Kristen was particularly protective. She even joked that she often had to interrupt their heartfelt conversations just to start filming.
Although the filmmakers eventually created the young Renesmee using computer-generated imagery, they first tried using a doll – with unsettling results. The doll was so creepy, in fact, that people started calling it ‘Chuckesmee’.
