I’ve been a fan of Steve Carell for ages, going all the way back to his improv days, but let’s be honest, he was absolutely at his peak during The Office. That show, which ran for nine seasons on NBC, was consistently hilarious, and Carell’s portrayal of Michael Scott, the regional manager, was just brilliant. He’s done some funny stuff in the thirteen years since the show wrapped, but honestly? Nothing has quite hit the same comedic heights – until now. His new series, premiering tonight on HBO Max, is genuinely his funniest work yet.
Get ready for the premiere of Rooster, HBO’s new comedy series! Starring Steve Carell, the show follows a novelist who gets caught up in his daughter’s personal and professional struggles. The first episode debuts on HBO and HBO Max on March 8th at 10 p.m. ET, and new episodes will air weekly on Sundays. The show, created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, is set on a college campus and also stars Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai. This first season has 10 episodes.
HBO’s Rooster Is a Laugh-Out-Loud Comedy You Need To See
Even before its release, the show Rooster was getting a lot of buzz for its humor. The first trailer, released in February, quickly gained positive comments on YouTube, with many viewers praising its funny moments and noting the similarities between Steve Carell’s character, Greg Russo, and his iconic role as Michael Scott. Though some critics say Russo is different from Michael Scott, Eric Francisco of Esquire believes the part allows Carell to showcase his comedic side again, marking a welcome return to lighter roles after a string of more serious performances.
Steve Carell is fantastic as Greg, a dad who tries to help his daughter by taking a job as a writer at a university, quickly realizing he’s out of his depth. The humor in the show largely comes from his funny, awkward attempts to understand college life today. The rest of the cast is great too, especially Deadwyler, who perfectly reacts to Carell’s antics. It’s a fast-paced, joke-filled show that’s consistently funny, but it also manages to have genuine emotional moments, making it a heartwarming watch. Critics seem to agree, giving it an 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Will There Be a Rooster Season 2?
The first episode of Rooster is incredibly engaging and will likely leave viewers wanting more than the 10 episodes that are currently planned. However, whether or not Rooster gets a second season is still up in the air, as HBO hasn’t announced a renewal yet – and that likely depends on how well the show performs with a wider audience.
Rooster will debut on HBO and HBO Max on March 8th at 10 p.m. ET, with new episodes released every Sunday.
