HBO Max has given a first look at the upcoming series from Bill Lawrence, the creator of popular shows like Shrinking, Scrubs, and Spin City. His new comedy, called Rooster, will star Steve Carell and a well-known actor from Ted Lasso.
Phil Dunster, known for his role in the popular Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso, will appear alongside Steve Carell and John C. McGinley in the upcoming series Rooster. The show is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on March 8th, and a trailer has recently been released.
Alongside Dunster, Carell, and McGinley, Rooster features Charley Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Lauren Tsai, Connie Britton, and Alan Ruck. The show was created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, and centers on Carell’s character, a writer, and his complex relationship with his daughter, played by Clive.
In the film, Dunster portrays the husband who leaves Clive’s character for a younger woman, a graduate student played by Tsai. Rooster is set on a college campus, and the trailer shows Carell defending his daughter against the college dean (McGinley). McGinley accuses the daughter of burning down a faculty building, which Carell dismisses as an accident. McGinley then claims she also attacked a professor, and Carell admits that was intentional. The trailer ends with Clive’s character punching Dunster.
Lawrence and Tarses are the creators and showrunners of Rooster. Lawrence, along with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer of Doozer Productions, also executive produces the show. Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Steve Carell are also producers. Rooster is produced by Warner Bros. Television, which has overall deals in place with both Doozer Productions and Tarses.
The Future of Ted Lasso Confirmed
Bill Lawrence, the creator of Ted Lasso along with Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, hasn’t confirmed whether Phil Dunster will reprise his role as Jamie Tartt in the show’s fourth season. However, new episodes of Ted Lasso are coming – Apple TV confirmed a summer 2026 premiere in January, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
In Season 4, Ted Lasso will face a new challenge: coaching a women’s soccer team. According to an official description from Apple TV+, the season will follow Ted as he returns to Richmond and takes on this new role. The season’s theme centers around taking risks and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, as Ted and the team learn to embrace the unknown.
Jason Sudeikis will be back for Season 4, alongside returning cast members Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift. Several new actors will also be joining the show, including Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsey, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely.
Rooster will premiere on March 8 on HBO Max.
