Steve Rogers’ MCU Return Totally Changes His Avengers: Endgame Farewell

Trailers for the new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, are starting to appear, and the first one surprised fans with the return of Chris Evans as Captain America. This isn’t the elderly Steve Rogers we saw in Avengers: Endgame, and the trailer shows him with a baby, leading fans to speculate who that child might be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the trailer is exciting, it raises a lot of questions – especially about what this means for the ending Steve Rogers had in Avengers: Endgame.

Both Steve Rogers and Tony Stark concluded their journeys in the same movie, Avengers: Endgame. Stark sacrificed himself as Iron Man to save everyone, while Rogers handed his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, signifying his retirement. Now, with Rogers returning in Avengers: Doomsday, it raises questions about the meaning of that original passing of the torch.

How Will Captain America’s Return Affect His MCU Farewell?

Bringing Steve Rogers back for Avengers: Doomsday creates a major issue: it could diminish Sam Wilson’s role as Captain America, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to firmly establish Sam in that position for future stories. Chris Evans has stated he won’t return as Captain America, and the scene showing him with a baby happened in the past. If Steve Rogers is even still alive today, he’d be an older man, and Sam Wilson is currently the one holding the Captain America shield.

Given Steve Rogers’ extensive history as Captain America, any earlier adventures must have taken place in alternate universes, as he clearly possessed the ability to travel between dimensions. This raises the question: did Steve foresee his future and Sam Wilson’s role? If so, was choosing Sam a genuine decision, or was it predetermined by his knowledge of what was to come? Considering this could diminish the emotional impact of their iconic moment in Avengers: Endgame is crucial.

Another major issue is that bringing Steve Rogers back in Avengers: Doomsday could negate the emotional impact of his ending in Avengers: Endgame, specifically his passing the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson. His return could undermine Sam Wilson’s established role and potentially undo the progress the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made with his character. While Robert Downey Jr.’s appearance as Doctor Doom wouldn’t create the same problem, as it’s a different role than Iron Man, Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers carries a significant risk for the MCU.

A key detail many fans aren’t discussing is the possibility that Steve Rogers won’t return to the present day in Avengers: Doomsday. The scene we saw shows a younger Steve Rogers after he lived out his life with Peggy Carter, including having a family and growing old together privately. This suggests his only appearance in Avengers: Doomsday might be as a memory or in a flashback to the past.

Doctor Doom intends to reshape the world according to his vision, a plan that will come to fruition by the end of Avengers: Doomsday and set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars. He’ll likely achieve this by traveling across different realities in the multiverse, and possibly even going back in time. It’s very possible Doom will target Steve Rogers in the past, believing his actions initiated the coming Incursion.

As a huge MCU fan, I think this is exactly the kind of bold move they need to make! I’d love to see Doctor Doom travel back in time to confront Captain America. It could even explain why he’s not around with Peggy later on, and maybe even shed light on whatever happened to Steve’s child – I have a feeling that could be a key piece of the puzzle when it comes to finally defeating Doom.

Who Is Captain America’s Baby?

The biggest question surrounding Steve Rogers’ return isn’t why he’s back, or what’s happening between him and Sam Wilson. Instead, the focus should be on the baby seen in the scene. Everyone is focused on Steve’s return, but the baby is the true key to understanding what’s going on in Avengers: Doomsday.

If Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Peggy Carter had a child, that child would likely inherit the Super Soldier Serum, potentially giving them superpowers. While Steve Rogers has a son in the main Marvel comic book universe – who was adopted – there are other possibilities for his children in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These could be explored in a future storyline involving the Young Avengers. One possibility is James Rogers, from an alternate reality, and another is a daughter named Sarah, who appeared in the What If… series. These characters offer potential for expanding the superhero world.

With plans for a Young Avengers team seemingly in the works for the MCU, Marvel is already laying the groundwork. Characters like Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, America Chavez, Ironheart, and Wiccan are established, and Wiccan is likely to meet Speed soon. There’s room for others, potentially including Miles Morales and a younger Nova. Crucially, Hulkling needs to appear alongside Wiccan, and they’ll likely need to introduce Patriot. While Elijah Bradley exists in the MCU, Marvel might opt to introduce Steve Rogers’ son as Patriot, which could tie into the hint dropped in the Avengers: Doomsday preview.
