The creator of popular shows like Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Coupling, Steven Moffat, has unveiled his latest project titled Number 10. Contrary to initial expectations, this series, initially branded as a political drama, is actually not primarily focused on politics.
He clarified: “For a long time, I’ve been fascinated by the peculiar happenings on that small, almost comical toy-like street in Britain that is [Number 10]. It may seem like this work isn’t about politics, but people will likely think it is.
Being there is truly extraordinary. The top political figures reside upstairs, while the worst coffee shop imaginable hides below. It’s almost like living in a house connected by an open space, with mice scurrying about and a nuclear deterrent within reach. To me, this place stands out as the most remarkable I can imagine.
He playfully hinted, “This place is filled with a fair amount of humor, it’s quite amusing.” He expressed his desire to pen an ensemble comedy similar to Press Gang from years past, and to achieve this, he needed a work environment. Undeniably, such a setting couldn’t be more fitting. If you wake up with a hangover here, you could potentially stir up conflict, as if you’re in the middle of a war.

Although he hasn’t revealed the identity of his Prime Minister yet, he mentioned that the show doesn’t disclose which political party holds power. He further explained that he personally isn’t concerned about who is in power and neither does he believe the characters are.
As a film enthusiast, I find that the world of politics is rather peculiar – much like how a movie plot unfolds only during specific scenes, such as every five years when we witness the grand spectacle known as the General Election. The remainder of the time, it’s all about managing the country’s day-to-day affairs, almost like a behind-the-scenes production where the real work is done!
I’ve read extensively, interacted with numerous individuals, some quite famous – though I can’t disclose their identities – and accumulated numerous anecdotes. Essentially, my experiences have been reminiscent of the classic power dynamics between the elite and the commoners, where those in high places govern the nation while those below manage everyday tasks, such as selling snacks like Twix.”
“I’ve had a lot of behind-the-scenes glimpses into the inner workings of society, which sometimes resembles the Upstairs Downstairs dynamic.”
“Through my reading and interactions with various individuals, I’ve developed an understanding of the intricate power dynamics within our society, much like the classic Upstairs Downstairs setup.

Although Moffat penned the pilot only a year back, implying it was quite speedy, he also mentioned that he had been mulling over the idea for quite some time, stating, “I’ve had this concept brewing in my mind for years.
I’ve been reading books about politics, not because I consider myself an expert, quite the contrary. My main curiosity lies in understanding the experience of becoming Prime Minister.
This phenomenon apparently accelerates aging by approximately 15 years within a year for everyone involved. Despite our skepticism and mockery towards it, it’s worth noting that those who criticize are not putting in the same effort as the one being criticized.
The show airing on Channel 4, titled Number 10, was recently announced. The description reveals that the government depicted will be fictional, but the issues portrayed will be genuine. Regardless of which political party is shown to be in power, as global chaos ensues, it becomes largely irrelevant.
This program delves into the lives of everyone within this building, not just the prime minister residing on the top floor. It includes a conspiracy theorist who operates the cafe several floors below, a man troubleshooting the faulty elevator, power-hungry ‘advisors’ scrabbling for office space in hidden nooks, and yes, let’s not forget our feline resident as well.
