Details are emerging about the canceled Ben Solo movie, and writer-director Steven has shared a poignant detail: it would have been the first Star Wars film to explore a character’s grief in such depth.
What did Steven Soderbergh say about the Ben Solo movie?
Director Steven Soderbergh recently shared on Bluesky that his planned film starring Adam Driver, originally titled ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo,’ was well into development. He explained that they had a completed script and submitted it to Disney for approval, but the project was ultimately turned down.
Soderbergh says he checked with producer Kathleen Kennedy, and she told him this was the first time a Star Wars project so far along in development had ever been cancelled.
After the issues with the Ben Solo storyline, Steven Soderbergh asked Kathleen Kennedy if Lucasfilm had ever submitted a completed script to Disney that was then turned down. She told him this was the first time that had ever happened.
I’ve been following the story of this shelved film closely, and it’s become clear it wasn’t just a fleeting idea. Recent reports, particularly from The Playlist, suggest it actually progressed into early pre-production before Disney ultimately decided to pull the plug. And according to Jeff Sneider over at The InSneider, don’t hold your breath for a return of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo anytime soon – Lucasfilm isn’t planning to revisit that character at the moment.
Adam Driver recently told the Associated Press that director Steven Soderbergh pitched a movie focusing solely on Kylo Ren, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Driver said the script was fantastic, but Disney’s Bob Iger ultimately rejected the idea, as he couldn’t reconcile how Ben Solo could have lived after his death in the film.
