Steven Spielberg Has a New Explanation for Harry Potter Movie Exit After 3 Years

Steven Spielberg is well-known for directing successful franchises like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, which both became cultural phenomena and huge financial successes. However, he famously turned down the opportunity to direct the first Harry Potter film. He previously explained his decision in 2023, and now, a recent interview is shedding new light on why he wasn’t interested in joining the Wizarding World.

In a conversation with TCM, Steven Spielberg revealed he chose to direct A.I. Artificial Intelligence instead of Harry Potter. He explained that Stanley Kubrick’s death in 1999 led him to make this decision.

Spielberg recounted that after Stanley Kubrick passed away, Christiane Kubrick and her brother, Jan Harlan, spoke with him at the funeral. They explained that Stanley had wanted Spielberg to take over and direct the film.

He continued, “I actually walked away from Harry Potter, which I was scheduled to direct as my next movie. I gave it up. It was going to be a huge movie because the book already was a runaway cultural phenomenon. I gave that up to essentially do A.I.”

Spielberg Has Previous Said He Chose Family Over Harry Potter

It’s always surprised people that Steven Spielberg passed on directing the first Harry Potter movie, especially considering how massive the franchise has become – and it’s about to get even bigger with the new HBO series. But recently, he finally explained his reasoning. He said back in 2023 that it wasn’t a creative decision, but a family one. Taking on Harry Potter would have meant being away from his family for a year and a half while filming in London, and he just wasn’t willing to make that sacrifice at the time.

It’s not the first time he’s talked about turning down the chance to work on Harry Potter. He previously told BBC Breakfast in 2021 that he left the project because he wasn’t comfortable making a film aimed at children. He had been involved for about six months before deciding it wasn’t the right fit, as he didn’t feel prepared to direct a movie for a young audience. He also mentioned his family obligations played a role in his decision, and this was in addition to his earlier comments in 2023 about prioritizing family over the film.

Spielberg recently explained his choice to direct A.I. instead of Harry Potter, offering more insight into his decision. It’s not that he’s changing his story, but rather providing additional context. Ultimately, timing played a key role. He was hesitant to commit to a long-term project that would take him away from his family, and he also wasn’t keen on directing a children’s film. The fact that Stanley Kubrick’s death and his family’s request for Spielberg to finish A.I. happened around the same time likely made the decision straightforward.

Did Spielberg Make the Right Call With Harry Potter?

While it might seem like a huge missed opportunity for Spielberg to have taken on A.I. rather than Harry Potter, it ultimately feels like it might have been the right call. While A.I. didn’t necessarily get the appreciation it deserved when it was released, in retrospect the movie is far better than you’d expect and, more than that, offers some complicated and thoughtful questions about technology and humanity that are more timely now than ever. The film also was the first of some of Spielberg’s more interesting movies, including Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can. Those films, while not his best-known films, are interesting additions to his filmography and just further show what he’s capable of as a filmmaker. Harry Potter went on to be a major force without him, and movie fans ended up getting a much more thematically diverse offering from Spielberg in the process. Feels like a win for everyone to us.
