Steven Spielberg Is Officially Making His Long-Awaited Western Debut

Steven Spielberg is known for successfully directing films in many different genres. He’s created critically acclaimed war movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List, and powerful dramas such as The Color Purple and The Fabelmans. His next film, Disclosure Day, is a science fiction story coming out this summer. But even with all he’s done, Spielberg continues to challenge himself, and he’s now planning to direct a Western.

I was really intrigued by what Spielberg shared during his SXSW keynote, especially when he chatted with Sean Fennessey (as reported by Variety). While they spent a good chunk of time talking about Disclosure Day, Fennessey cleverly steered the conversation towards whether we’d ever see Spielberg tackle a Western. And the answer is… yes! He’s actually working on one right now, and from what he said, it sounds absolutely fantastic – his words were, and I quote, it ‘kicks ass’.

“I can’t reveal anything right now, but I have something in development. And it kicks ass.”

Spielberg mentioned he’d like to film the movie in Texas, a comment that might have been to please the audience at the Texas festival. However, he also promised the film would steer clear of typical Western tropes. He assured fans it would still have all the elements they love about the genre, stating:

Expect to see horses and guns, but definitely not the usual clichés or predictable character types. We’re avoiding stereotypes entirely.

The director didn’t reveal many specifics, but he’s known for quickly moving from idea to production. This suggests his Western film could be in the works faster than expected.
