Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day Will Answer Questions From His 49-Year-Old Sci-Fi Classic

Steven Spielberg’s new movie, Disclosure Day, will finally answer some lingering questions from his classic alien film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Steven Spielberg has made three films about aliens: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and War of the Worlds (2005). Now, after more than two decades, he’s revisiting the topic with Disclosure Day, coming to theaters this June.

Emily Blunt, the star of Disclosure Day and the actress playing meteorologist Margaret Fairchild, recently told Empire magazine that the new film addresses some of the mysteries left open by Close Encounters.

“There are definitely questions posed by Close Encounters that are answered in Disclosure Day.”

It’s been 49 years since Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out in theaters. When it was announced that Spielberg’s new movie would be about aliens, many people online started wondering if Disclosure Day is a continuation of the beloved 1970s sci-fi film.

Although Blunt didn’t detail the exact questions Disclosure Day will address, the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind explores themes of alien life, humanity’s search for understanding in the universe, and the government’s involvement in these matters.

Spielberg has often wondered if there’s life beyond Earth, a question that’s been on his mind for years. He hopes his film, Disclosure Day, will finally offer answers – both for him and for his audience.

Everyone is looking forward to Disclosure Day, a new movie coming out in 2026. Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a TV meteorologist whose life is turned upside down when she unexpectedly starts making strange clicking noises during a live broadcast. This unusual scene has been a key part of the film’s promotion, appearing in all the trailers.

Emily Blunt, known for her roles in films like The Devil Wears Prada, A Quiet Place, Mary Poppins Returns, and Oppenheimer, recently told Empire that her character, Margaret, feels like an outsider. The movie will delve into this feeling, although it’s currently unclear how it relates to her dramatic experience on live television.

She’s always felt restless and out of place, like she doesn’t quite fit in wherever she goes.

Emily Blunt leads the cast of Disclosure Day, joined by Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, Mckenna Bridger, Elizabeth Marvel, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Michael Gaston, Elliot Villar, Tommy Martinez, Patricia Conolly, Noah Robbins, Chavo Guerrero Jr., Lance Archer, Brian Cage, and Gabby Beans.

Released in 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind significantly influenced the science fiction genre. The film follows Roy Neary, who has an encounter with a UFO, and Jillian Guiler, a mother whose son is mysteriously taken.

The film was a major success, earning $306 million and receiving high praise from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes). It received eight Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Cinematography, as well as a special award recognizing the sound editing work of Frank Warner.

Disclosure Day will be released in theaters on Friday, June 12, 2026.
