The popular and highly-rated series by Steven Spielberg is coming back to streaming! After being unavailable for a while, it will soon be available on Netflix.
Starting January 1, 2026, you’ll be able to watch Falling Skies on Netflix. This sci-fi series, which originally aired from 2011 to 2015 and was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and created by Robert Rodat, takes place after an alien invasion. It follows a group of people trying to survive and fight back in a world that’s been devastated.
The TV show Falling Skies featured Tom Mason, a history professor from Boston, who became the leader of a resistance group. The situation is desperate for Tom, as his wife died during the initial alien invasion and one of his three sons was taken captive. He teams up with other survivors, forming a group called ‘Second Massachusetts,’ and uses his understanding of military strategy to help them fight back.
The survivors quickly realize the aliens they’re fighting are much smarter than they initially thought. What the aliens actually want on Earth is still a frightening unknown. The show features a talented cast, including Wyle as Tom Mason, alongside Moon Bloodgood, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, and Seychelle Gabriel.
The television series Falling Skies lasted for five seasons, totaling 52 episodes. It received positive reviews, especially in its early years: the first two seasons both have an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and are designated ‘Certified Fresh.’ Later seasons also performed well, with Season 3 earning 77%, Season 4 achieving 88%, and Season 5 receiving a 70% approval rating.
Critics immediately liked Falling Skies for its blend of science fiction action, intriguing mysteries, and heartfelt family stories. Throughout its five seasons, the show received two Primetime Emmy nominations for its visual effects and won the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series in 2011, among other honors.
Spielberg Played a Large Part in the Creation of Falling Skies
Steven Spielberg is a hugely influential filmmaker, but he wasn’t deeply involved in the day-to-day creation of the TV show Falling Skies. It’s common for famous executive producers to take a less hands-on role, and in this case, the show’s creator, Robert Rodat, wrote the first episode based on an idea he developed with Spielberg. Spielberg also came up with the show’s title.
In a 2020 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Noah Wyle described how involved Steven Spielberg was with the show. He explained that Spielberg’s support immediately elevated the project, and that he contributed to all aspects of its creation – from refining the script and choosing the cast, to reviewing footage, suggesting edits, and even working on the visual effects for the aliens and spaceships.
Falling Skies heads to Netflix on Jan. 1, 2026.
