Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic World Rebirth: Avoiding Self-Referencing and Creating Fear

The franchise has returned with a fresh movie now playing in cinemas. Interestingly, while it boasts a completely different acting ensemble, it retains the services of its original scriptwriter, David Koepp.

Koepp has teamed up with Steven Spielberg on numerous productions beyond the dinosaur series. Yet, he’s now revisiting the Jurassic universe for a fresh chapter. While Gareth Edwards directed this new installment, Spielberg served as a producer and was deeply involved in its making. During an interview, Koepp shared what was most crucial to Spielberg in “Jurassic World: Dominion”.

As someone who’s had the pleasure of working with Steven Spielberg on around ten to twelve films throughout my career, let me tell you, his enthusiasm for coming up with fresh ideas never fades. The moment when you suggest, “What if we did this…” is still what keeps him so actively involved, whether it’s a project he’s directing himself or not.

As a supporter, I find myself echoing the sentiments of the screenwriter: “I understand why he’d want to continue – it’s because it’s enjoyable for both of us. We have a history together, as he was the one who initiated this franchise. It feels like his baby, so I believe he felt a deep sense of care and responsibility, asking, ‘How can we keep this going? What could make it even better?’

“From my perspective as a film enthusiast, I was determined to create an experience that would send shivers down your spine. I wanted to reveal sights that have never been witnessed before. Moreover, let’s strive to make the science in our story as authentic and plausible as possible.”

Koepp additionally emphasized, “Something significant to him across all his work – but particularly in this film – was his strong desire to steer clear of anything resembling self-referential content. He dislikes quoting himself. He’s sensitized to it. If something felt too reminiscent, he would remark, ‘Haven’t I done that before? Avoid that.’

David Koepp and Steven Spielberg Will Reunite

As a cinephile reminiscing about my cinematic journey, I must say that even though Steven Spielberg didn’t helm the director’s chair for every project, his creative touch was still palpable. Following the 1993 original, he teamed up with the screenwriter once more for the 1997 sequel, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” then ventured into “War of the Worlds” in 2005 and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008. Their partnership continues to thrive in their latest film endeavor.

Despite being enveloped in secrecy regarding Spielberg’s upcoming original production, the director has shared some insights on the new film, rumored to be a UFO-themed movie. He mentioned that they completed shooting approximately three weeks ago, adding, “I believe it looks incredible,” Koepp shared.

Instead of providing more specifics about the storyline or name, Koepp commended his longtime collaborator, saying, “What he does exceptionally well is blend grand spectacle with genuine human emotion in a way that no other director does. This movie is going to be quite an emotional journey.
