A new series continuing the story of Steven Universe is in development with Cartoon Network, and there’s been a recent update on its progress. Like many other beloved Cartoon Network shows from the past – such as the upcoming Regular Show revival – Steven Universe is returning, though in a unique way.
Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe, revealed last year at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival that she’s developing a new series within the Cartoon Network universe, continuing the story from the original. Ian Jones-Quartey, an executive producer on the new show and a veteran of both Steven Universe and O.K. K.O. Let’s Be Heroes, recently shared an update on social media: production is still underway, which is exciting news for fans.
Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars Shares Promising Production Update

I recently heard from Quartey about Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, and while they didn’t have any specific details to share just yet, they did confirm that work on the series is still ongoing – which is really encouraging! It’s been about a year since the project was first announced, and it’s good to know things are moving forward. As a reminder, Rebecca Sugar and Quartey are both executive producers, and this new series will continue the story from the original Steven Universe.
I’ve heard that a new series called Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars is coming to Prime Video, and it looks really exciting! From what’s been shared, it seems we’ll be following Lars and his crew on a series of adventures – they’ll be smuggling things, avoiding trouble with the law, and digging up mysteries related to the old Gem Empire. However, as of right now, there’s no official word on when it will be released or if the original voice actors will be returning.
Why Steven Universe’s New Revival Is a Great Idea

Bringing back Steven Universe might seem unexpected, considering the original series wrapped up Steven’s story quite neatly. It not only ended with a TV movie, but also a follow-up series, Steven Universe Future, which provided a satisfying conclusion. However, fans know the Steven Universe world is vast and offers many possibilities for new stories. This new series takes advantage of that, focusing on the character of Lars.
The Steven Universe episode “Lars of the Stars,” from Season 5, showed Lars becoming a pirate captain while he and his gem companions worked to rescue others affected by the empire throughout the universe. The episode had a lot of potential for further development, but there wasn’t enough time within the show’s original run. Now, after a long wait, it looks like we’ll finally get to see more of that story unfold.
