Stop Announcing Star Wars Games So Early

Game developers and publishers need to rethink announcing Star Wars games so far in advance. Many long-time gamers have been disappointed when highly anticipated games get cancelled. A prime example is Star Wars 1313, a promising action-adventure game set in the gritty criminal underworld of Coruscant. The initial gameplay footage was fantastic and offered a fresh take on the Star Wars universe, and the reveal that the player would control Boba Fett only added to the excitement. Sadly, the game was ultimately never released.

The game was revealed only a few months before Disney bought Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, leading to its cancellation and disappearance. This isn’t an isolated incident; several other Star Wars games have faced similar fates. For example, Amy Hennig, known for creating the Uncharted series, was working on a realistic Star Wars game focused on a band of rogues. It was announced with very little information – no title, just a short gameplay snippet. After years of no updates, the project was silently dropped, disappointing many fans. Currently, we’re seeing a pattern of Star Wars games being announced prematurely.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic‘s Early Announcement Is a Sign of a Larger Issue

The Game Awards 2025 kicked off with a huge reveal: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new Star Wars role-playing game. It’s a sequel to the beloved Knights of the Old Republic, and it’s being led by the original director of that game. Fans were thrilled – it’s essentially Knights of the Old Republic 3, something they’ve been asking for for years. However, the excitement cooled off a bit the next day. While everyone expected the game was still some time away, as it was announced with just a cinematic trailer, the actual release date turned out to be much further off than anticipated.

People recently discovered that Arcanaut Studios, the developer of the new game, was founded in July 2025. This suggests development is in its very early stages, likely with a small team. Some predicted a release date as far off as 2030, but the game’s director, Casey Hudson, stated it will come out before then. I’m cautiously optimistic, believing a late 2029 release is the most realistic possibility. However, given how often game releases are pushed back, it could realistically launch anytime in the next decade.

It’s clear this game is still a long way off. This announcement follows a pattern – four years ago, two other big Star Wars games, Star Wars: Eclipse and a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, were revealed. We haven’t heard much about either of those projects since. The Knights of the Old Republic remake switched developers, and Quantic Dream has occasionally confirmed they’re still developing Star Wars: Eclipse, but updates have been scarce.

So far, only two major Star Wars games – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Outlaws – have been announced and actually released in a timely manner this generation. Other developers tend to announce games too early, which builds hype but then leaves fans waiting – sometimes for games that are ultimately cancelled. It seems like some studios, such as Arcanaut Studios, might be doing this partly to attract potential employees.

Announcing a new Star Wars game helps attract skilled developers to the project. Respawn Entertainment recently demonstrated a low-key approach to this, simply confirming they’re working on the next Star Wars Jedi game with a straightforward text announcement – no big reveal needed.

Respawn also previously announced they were developing a Star Wars first-person shooter early in the current console generation. While it still occasionally gets mentioned, the lack of details meant expectations remained reasonable and people quickly lost interest. Respawn ultimately cancelled the project, and while fans were a little disappointed to hear a skilled FPS team was abandoning it, the cancellation didn’t linger for long.

As a huge Star Wars fan, it breaks my heart knowing we likely won’t see Fate of the Old Republic return anytime soon. I just know every time there’s a big gaming event – Summer Game Fest, PlayStation State of Play, The Game Awards – the chat and social media will be flooded with people asking about it. We’ll keep seeing articles speculating about whether it even exists. Honestly, it’s just frustrating for everyone involved. It would be so much better if they waited to announce something until the game was actually close – maybe within two years. But let’s be real, that probably won’t happen.
