Determining the hardest shot in the Star Wars films is tricky. While Ray Harryhausen was a pioneer in animation – famous for films like Sinbad and King Kong – he wasn’t the only one to push the boundaries of the art form. Phil Tippett is another key innovator, winning an Oscar for his work on Jurassic Park, and contributing to films like Robocop, Starship Troopers, and, importantly, the original Star Wars trilogy.
Now in his seventies, Phil Tippett is still actively working in film. After decades of effort, he finally released his stop-motion animation film, ‘Mad God,’ in 2022. Throughout his career, he’s also contributed to many other well-known movies, including ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ (he worked on the mine truck sequence), ‘Willow,’ two ‘Robocop’ sequels, ‘The Twilight Saga,’ and even ‘Howard the Duck’.
We recently spoke with Phil about his extensive work, and naturally, Star Wars came up – including discussions about the chess set and Jabba the Hutt.
