The series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has three more seasons left before it concludes, yet its executive producers are hinting at the possibility of a follow-up show. This series serves as a prequel to “Star Trek: The Original Series,” focusing on the escapades of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) during the years leading up to James T. Kirk’s (Paul T. Wesley) assumption of command. Interestingly, “Star Trek: The Original Series” did not begin with Kirk taking over the Enterprise; instead, it started approximately two years into the ship’s five-year exploratory mission. Intriguingly, the creators have expressed a desire to carry on their narrative with what they are calling “Star Trek: Year One,” but they need viewers’ backing.
During San Diego Comic-Con’s panel in Hall H on Saturday, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman brought up the concept of “Star Trek: Year One”. Meanwhile, the eagerly anticipated third season of “Strange New Worlds” debuted this month and runs through September. Filming for Season 4 has already wrapped up, with Paramount announcing a fifth season order. However, the fifth season will consist of just six episodes, marking the end of the series.
Goldsman, Myers, and Kurtzman understand there’s still plenty of ground to cover before their series concludes, and they want to ensure it ends strongly – a “sticking the landing”. With the end almost in reach, they’ve started contemplating the possibility of more seasons starring Captain Kirk. They suggested that fans might want to write letters expressing their interest in a follow-up series to Paramount. Later, they discussed this idea more extensively with Entertainment Weekly.
Myers expressed his joy at the prospect of further exploring the transition from Pike’s crew to Kirk’s crew, as well as the subsequent journey that Kirk’s crew embarks on. He pointed out that when we join the original series (TOS), it’s not the very beginning – there are already established relationships among the characters. He wondered about how these connections developed and expressed his excitement about delving deeper into the stories of Sulu, McCoy, Chekov, and other crew members, given their extended lifespans.
In “Strange New Worlds,” we find many beloved characters from the original series (TOS) who have already served on the Enterprise for quite some time. However, not all these crew members will accompany Kirk on his mission. Yet, Myers hinted that if a new show were to emerge, it could delve into the stories of those left behind. At this point, Myers and the team haven’t engaged in specific discussions about a potential sequel, but they seem to have several intriguing concepts up their sleeves.
Absolutely, the uncertainty surrounding Paramount’s future is centered around their upcoming merger with Skydance. Myers expressed optimism, stating that the passion and support from the cast, crew, and fans could potentially turn this seemingly unlikely scenario into a reality. In essence, he said, “We voice our dreams boldly. We often say, ‘Look, we have these fantastic sets. You benefit financially from them.’
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that the adventure continues in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! As we speak, Season 3 is unfolding, and three episodes are now available for streaming on Paramount+. Each Thursday through September 11th, new episodes are premiering, keeping us on the edge of our seats. And here’s some fantastic news for fellow Trekkies – Season 4 has already been filmed and is set to debut in 2026! What an incredible journey it’s been, and I can hardly wait to see where these new worlds will take us next.
