Stranger Things 5 Editing Error Has Fans Upside Down With Laughter

Even stranger things than monsters are being found in the town of Hawkins.

Sharp-eyed viewers noticed a funny mistake in the second episode of Stranger Things season five. In the episode, Will (played by Noah Schnapp) and Robin (played by Maya Hawke) are trying to locate the spot where Will last had a vision related to Vecna.

A TikTok video posted on December 4th shows Will and Robin walking through a park at night with flashlights. As they get closer to the location where Will had a vision of Vecna, you can see markings on the ground – an ‘X’ made of orange tape and another of blue tape – probably used to show the actors where to stand.

The TikTok user posted a video with a crying emoji and the caption, “Oh no, not the orange and blue tape marking the scene!”

You know, it’s funny – when a little editing slip-up happened, people weren’t mad at all! Actually, a lot of viewers said it was a good reminder that even things we see on screen aren’t always perfect, and that’s okay. It felt really relatable, honestly.

One viewer shared that they enjoy spotting small things like this as a reminder that the show isn’t real, while another playfully suggested someone is already building a whole theory around the tape used to mark positions.

Some viewers noted the tape visible in the corner of the shot was a small mistake, especially when compared to bigger editing errors in other shows. For example, fans famously spotted a Starbucks cup accidentally left in a scene during season eight of Game of Thrones.

As one user put it, “At least it’s not like when Game of Thrones left a Starbucks cup on the table.”

It’s common for TV shows to have production errors. For example, viewers recently noticed another continuity mistake in the latest season of Stranger Things.

You know, one thing that always struck me while rewatching the first season of the show? There’s a really sweet flashback with Will and his brother Jonathan building this amazing fort – they call it Castle Byers – and it’s a beautiful, sunny day. It’s such a key location throughout the whole season, and that little moment really sets the stage for everything that happens. It’s a lovely, simple scene that just feels so… hopeful, before everything goes a bit sideways.

This version of events doesn’t quite match up with how Jonathan remembered things in the first season.

In a scene from 2016, Jonathan reminisced with Will about the night their dad disappeared. He remembered they spent the whole night building Castle Byers, exactly as Will had designed it. Jonathan playfully teased Will, saying he wasn’t very good at hammering and kept missing the nails.

He continued, saying that it started raining, but they decided to stay outside regardless. They both ended up being sick for about a week afterward, but they felt they had no choice but to finish what they were doing.

Before creating Stranger Things, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer worked on M. Night Shyamalan’s television series Wayward Pines. Their initial idea for the show was actually called Montauk.

Matt explained to The Daily Beast in 2016 that it’s incredibly difficult to convince people to change a title once you’ve become attached to it. He said that when they first suggested Stranger Things, it was a struggle to get others to accept it.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! The Duffers – those geniuses! – originally wanted to film everything on Long Island! Can you imagine?! But apparently, it just wasn’t practical, logistically speaking. It was too hard to make it work, which is a total bummer because Long Island would have been perfect for the show’s vibe. Still, they made magic happen where they ended up, obviously!

Matt told The Hollywood Reporter they chose Montauk as a filming location because of its beautiful seaside environment, its connection to the setting of Jaws (which they love), and the potential for a ‘really cool’ vibe. However, they quickly realized shooting on Long Island during the winter would be too difficult and costly.

Atlanta ultimately became the home base for production.

Before Netflix decided to air the show, nearly 20 other networks rejected it, as reported by Vulture. Executives at those networks thought viewers wouldn’t connect with a series focused on four child actors.

4. To play Eleven, then 12-year-old Millie Bobby Brown had to say goodbye to her hair.

In 2018, at PaleyFest, the actress described shaving her head as the most liberating experience of her life. She explained that with the final cut of her hair, she felt completely exposed and could no longer hide. Looking in the mirror, she understood her purpose was to inspire others, realizing that beauty doesn’t depend on having hair.

She found inspiration for her work in Charlize Theron’s performance in Mad Max: Fury Road, and also looked to old yearbook pictures of her fellow actress, Winona Ryder.

She mentioned that Winona Ryder’s short, pixie cut was a great look in the past, and it inspired her to try the style herself!

The British actress shared that she used a surprising resource to nail her American accent: Miley Cyrus’s show, Hannah Montana. She told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the show was “so good,” praising everything about it and crediting it with helping her master the accent.

The Duffer brothers used scenes from the movie Stand By Me when auditioning young actors to find the four main child stars for their show.

The brothers had a specific vision for the character of Mike. However, that changed after Finn Wolfhard’s audition.

Matt explained to The Daily Beast in 2016 that Mike Wheeler was initially conceived as a more wistful and imaginative character, similar to Mikey from The Goonies. However, after seeing Finn Wolfhard’s naturally energetic and anxious demeanor, they decided to tailor the character to fit his personality.

Gaten Matarazzo, who played Dustin, also had a big impact on the show’s development. According to Matt, they initially envisioned Dustin as a typical “nerd” character, but after meeting Gaten, they reshaped the role to better suit his talents and personality.

After the show became popular, sales of Eggo waffles jumped significantly, thanks to Eleven’s love for them. Kellogg’s reported a 14 percent increase in consumption in late 2017, following the release of season two. October of that year also saw the highest number of social media mentions for the product ever recorded in a single month.

In early 2018, David Harbour became an internet sensation after agreeing to a fan’s unique request: taking her senior portraits. It started when the fan tweeted, asking how many retweets it would take to convince him to do her photos, to which Harbour jokingly replied he’d need 25,000 retweets, plus the chance to wear a school sweatshirt and hold a trombone. True to his promise, he followed through and took the photos!

He jokingly predicted on Instagram that, 24 years later, he’d be known for crashing someone else’s high school senior photos.

Later that year, Harbour playfully offered to marry a fan if they could get 125,000 retweets and promised him the first piece of wedding cake. He actually became ordained online and ended up performing the ceremony dressed as his character, Chief Hopper.

Fans often speculated that Eleven might be Hopper’s biological daughter, but he ultimately became her father figure. A touching detail revealed in the season two finale showed Eleven wearing a blue braided bracelet – made from a ribbon belonging to Hopper’s deceased daughter – at her school dance, hinting at their deep connection.

Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, revealed that her first kiss was with Finn Wolfhard (Mike) during season one of the show. She described it as a ‘strange experience,’ explaining that having a large crew watching made it feel overwhelming.

I remember when they had to kiss for a second time on the show! She later shared something so sweet – her co-star had whispered something to her right before the take. It was a really cute moment and showed how comfortable they were with each other.

She recalled that he told her he was about to kiss her, explaining, “He said, ‘I’m coming in,’ but he said it in a really strange way—like a ventriloquist! It was so bizarre.”

Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, who star as a couple on the show, started dating in 2016 and have generally kept their romance out of the public eye.

Natalia explained to Refinery 29 that she values keeping her personal life—especially relationships with family and friends—private. However, she also shared that collaborating with someone you see outside of work can be enjoyable. “It’s always really fun,” she said.

Surprisingly, Joe Keery’s character, Steve Harrington, wasn’t originally meant to survive the first season of the show.

According to Ross, they quickly grew fond of actor Joe Keery during the first season of the show. This affection led them to create a storyline where his character, Steve, teams up with Jonathan and Nancy to help resolve the central conflict. Initially, Steve was intended to be a stereotypical, unpleasant athlete, but Keery brought so much more depth to the role.

18. Also slated to perish was Eleven. Yes, really

In the book Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down, Ross Duffer explained that the original plan was for Eleven to sacrifice herself to save everyone. However, when they realized the show might last beyond one season, they had to change that ending. They realized the show wouldn’t work without Eleven, and Millie Bobby Brown was a key part of that. If Stranger Things continued, Eleven absolutely had to survive.

The seventh episode of the second season, called “The Lost Sister,” nearly didn’t make the final cut. The Duffer brothers, in an interview with Vulture, explained they worried the episode—which focuses on Eleven searching for another child with similar experiences—would disrupt the story’s flow.

Matt explained that as they started writing the episode, they questioned whether it was truly necessary. They even considered cutting it entirely, but the planned ending involving Eleven didn’t feel right without it. Ultimately, they realized the episode was essential to make the ending work.

20. Eleven’s sibling was written to be a boy, with the episode originally titled “The Lost Brother.”

Once the audition was open to all young actors, Linnea Berthelsen was cast in the role. The episode then showed Eleven meeting her “sister,” Kali. According to Matt, Linnea and Millie (who plays Eleven) had a strong connection, and Millie specifically requested to work with Linnea.

Nicola Coughlan, the actress known for her role in Bridgerton, originally tried out for the part of Robin. However, she later landed the role of Penelope Featherington. Maya Hawke ended up getting the role of Robin, and Nicola has said Hawke was much more suited for it than she would have been.

She explained that actors can learn a lot by looking at roles they didn’t land. It helps them realize it’s not a reflection of their talent, but simply that some parts are a better fit for others. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and not every role will be right for every actor.

Oh my gosh, before Madelyn Cline became Sarah Cameron and totally stole my heart on Outer Banks, can you believe she was already making waves? She was Tina, one of the super catty girls at Hawkins High, in season two of Stranger Things! I totally didn’t recognize her at first, but now I’m going back and rewatching everything, and it’s amazing to see how far she’s come! She was always a star!

To land the role of Billy, the rebellious older stepbrother of Max (played by Sadie Sink), Australian actor Dacre Montgomery created a memorable audition tape. He told GQ he aimed to impress the Duffer brothers with a bold and playful performance.

Dacre took a big risk to get noticed: he filmed himself dancing to 80s hits like “Come on Eileen” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” while wearing very little clothing. He was worried about the reaction, thinking it could end his career, but he hoped someone would recognize his talent and give him an opportunity. Luckily, the gamble worked out for him.

As a huge fan, I was so thrilled to read the report from Deadline about the cast getting well-deserved raises before season three! It was amazing to learn the younger actors went from earning around $30,000 an episode to over $200,000 – some sources even said $250,000! Winona and David, as the established stars, were reportedly making between $300,000 and $350,000 per episode, which makes sense, and it was great to see Natalia and Charlie also getting a big boost, earning around $100,000 to $150,000 each episode. They all deserve it!

Priah Ferguson, who plays Lucas’s feisty younger sister Erica, was originally only meant to be in one episode of season two. However, the Duffer brothers liked her performance so much they kept adding her to more scenes. She became a main cast member in the next season.

Because the young actors were still growing during filming, the costume designers had a hard time making sure their clothes fit consistently from scene to scene.

It was a real challenge keeping up with how fast the kids were growing,” costume designer Kim Wilcox explained to TopMob News. “One child, in particular, seemed to outgrow his shoes every three weeks, needing a half size larger each time. To solve this, we sourced shoes from brands that offered the same style in a wide range of sizes. We’d buy five pairs of each size, so we’d always have a replacement when a child had a growth spurt.

The Duffer brothers drew inspiration from films like The Goonies, E.T., and Stand By Me, but they were careful not to make the references too obvious.

When we initially presented the project to Netflix, we created a lengthy, two-and-a-half-minute trailer. It combined clips and ideas from around 20 to 30 movies, aiming to capture the essence of Stranger Things. However, as Matt explained to The Daily Beast, those were simply the films that inspired us – deeply ingrained in our creative backgrounds. Surprisingly, once we started writing individual episodes, we rarely discussed those movies directly. Our focus shifted to developing the story and letting the characters drive the narrative. Otherwise, it would have felt disjointed and chaotic.

The team aimed for a classic look by minimizing special effects, but they soon discovered it was much harder than they expected.

Originally, we wanted to use only practical effects, like they did in movies like The Thing and Alien. But we quickly learned how incredibly difficult that is. It takes a huge amount of time and planning. We were writing scripts fast, but there just wasn’t enough time to prepare all the practical effects. When we got to set, a lot of the ideas that sounded good in theory just weren’t feasible because we didn’t have the necessary preparation time, explained Ross.

The creators, the Duffer brothers, originally planned for ‘Stranger Things’ to last five seasons. According to Netflix executive Matthew Thunell, many of their ideas from 2015 are now coming to fruition as the series nears its conclusion. Variety magazine reported that each episode of season four cost around $30 million to produce.

Although the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, know how the show will end, they’re not quite finished with the story and its supernatural world, the Upside Down.

I’m thrilled to share that we’re developing a spin-off! It’s still very early stages – we haven’t even fully fleshed out the concept yet, let alone put pen to paper. We’ve been keeping it under wraps, but it turns out our friend Finn actually guessed the core idea, and honestly, it’s going to be very different from anything you’ve seen before. He’s the only one who knows at this point, and we’re keeping it that way for now!
