With the recent release of the Stranger Things documentary leading fans to speculate that the Duffer brothers used ChatGPT to compose Season 5’s script, Martina Radwan, who helmed One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, has come out to clear the air. Martina Radwan denies any unethical use of generative AI in Stranger Things’ writers’ room
A German-Syrian cinematographer recently addressed online rumors that artificial intelligence was heavily used in the production of Stranger Things Season 5. She clarified that AI was only used for initial exploratory work.
Martina Radwan told The Hollywood Reporter she’s baffled by people online who speculate without checking facts. She specifically questioned how anyone could write a complex story with many characters using ChatGPT without doing basic research, saying it doesn’t make sense to her.
The Emmy-winning actress questioned whether fans’ worries about the Duffer brothers using ChatGPT for the fifth season of Stranger Things were justified. She pointed out that no one has actually confirmed ChatGPT was accessible during writing, comparing it to simply having a phone nearby while working. She explained they use various tools while juggling multiple tasks, and expressed sadness that people seem determined to find fault with a show they supposedly enjoy.

I noticed the Duffer brothers had a ChatGPT window open on their computer, which got a lot of us fans wondering if they might be using AI to help write the script for the final season. It definitely sparked a lot of theories!
Martina Radwan doesn’t agree. When directly asked if generative AI was used unethically in the Season 5 writers’ room, the filmmaker said, “Absolutely not.” She explained that she saw a lot of creative collaboration and discussion, clarifying that writers’ rooms aren’t just about people writing – they’re about developing the story together.
