Matt Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, has indicated that a sequel series is unlikely, calling the idea a cynical attempt to make money.
The popular sci-fi show just released its last episode, a two-hour finale, concluding the intense battle between Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) and the residents of Hawkins.
The story ends with a touching scene of Mike and his friends playing Dungeons & Dragons together for what feels like the last time. They’re about to leave his basement hangout and begin a new phase of their lives, finally free from the years of terrifying monsters they’ve faced.
The ending feels conclusive, but with reboots and revivals so common now, creators Matt and Ross Duffer will likely be asked about continuing the story for a long time.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer hinted at the upcoming conclusion of the show, stating that Mike closing the basement door symbolizes the end of the story for key characters like Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper.

He explained that there are no plans to revisit the story, as it was always meant to be a coming-of-age tale. The show’s conclusion, with the character closing the basement door, symbolizes him leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood.
Matt playfully suggested a sequel could focus on a midlife crisis, but quickly dismissed the idea as boring. He also expressed skepticism about bringing back Grandpa Hopper, fearing it would seem like a cynical attempt to make more money.
The Duffer brothers aren’t interested in simply continuing the original Stranger Things story, but they’re still excited about their new live-action spin-off. They promise this new show will be completely separate and stand on its own merits.
Matt and Ross are thrilled to create fresh characters and a unique storyline, while staying true to the feel of Stranger Things.
We don’t have many specifics about the new Stranger Things spin-off yet, but it will explore some unanswered questions from season 5. Specifically, it will delve into the story of the rock that influenced young Henry Creel and ultimately led him to become Vecna.
Matt also mentioned in the interview that the spin-off won’t focus on rocks or mining, but it will resolve a remaining plot point related to those elements.
This series introduces a completely fresh set of stories. While it’s connected to the original and will resolve some unanswered questions, it doesn’t focus on the Mind Flayer or the Upside Down. Instead, it aims to shed light on Henry’s past and provide some clarity about his memories.
While opinions on Stranger Things season 5 have been varied, the show still drew a massive audience for Netflix. Because of this success, it’s unlikely any planned spin-offs or related projects will be canceled.
