Be warned, spoilers follow for the final episode of Stranger Things! The show has officially ended, but the finale didn’t quite tie up all loose ends, leaving viewers with some unanswered questions. Though most of the main characters got the endings they deserved, certain plot points remain open to interpretation. The creators of the popular Netflix series have now explained a hidden connection between the show and a well-known play, revealing details about the backstory of the main villain.
The Duffer brothers recently told Variety that Hopper and Joyce probably figured out they went to high school with Henry Creel (Vecna) during the time jump in the Stranger Things finale. While the show hinted at this connection, the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow explored it in detail, revealing Vecna’s backstory. The Duffers confirmed the couple likely made the connection, but they didn’t want the play to be essential viewing for most fans who hadn’t seen it.
We definitely walked a tightrope with how much to reveal. We didn’t want to frustrate viewers who hadn’t seen the play, and having people discuss plot points would have been confusing for them. But I’m confident that conversation happened within the story.
Matt Duffer explained they wanted the final season’s main storyline to remain unchanged, even with the addition of the play. The play simply provides background information on Henry’s history after becoming connected to the Mind Flayer, but it doesn’t affect how the season’s core events unfold.
Although Stranger Things suggested Joyce and her classmates had a connection to Henry Creel, the show didn’t allow the characters to discover this. Considering everything else happening in the finale, it’s likely not a major issue. However, revealing Vecna’s backstory through a play most fans won’t be able to watch might be disappointing. Luckily, the upcoming spin-off will probably explore Vecna’s powers in more detail.
‘Stranger Things’ Creators Confirm Spin-Off Plot

Netflix
Even though the main Stranger Things story has ended, the world isn’t quite finished with Hawkins. A new spin-off series is in development, and the Duffer brothers recently shared that it will explore a major mystery left unanswered in the finale. We learned that Henry Creel gained his powers from a strange object, but it’s still unknown how that object ended up with the scientist he murdered. The Duffer brothers have confirmed that the spin-off will reveal the origins of this object.
I’m going to be a little vague here, Kate, because I think I can say this, Ross? It’s just difficult not to mention it.
Variety: Spinoffy?!
We’ve been talking about spin-offs, and you guessed right – it’s happening! It’s a bit frustrating to have that leaked, but we want to clarify what to expect. The spin-off will explore some unanswered questions and explain things that fans have been curious about. However, it won’t be a continuation of the Mind Flayer storyline or focus on existing mysteries in detail. It’s a completely new story with its own mythology, but it will tie up some loose ends from the original series.
As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for the next season of Stranger Things. But given how popular the recent finale has been – it’s breaking viewing records – it’s likely they’ll release the new season as soon as possible.
