Stranger Things creators confirm what actually just happened with Nancy and Jonathan

**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2*

With only one episode left, the hugely popular show Stranger Things is nearing its end after nine years. The sci-fi/fantasy series will soon be finished on Netflix.

The final episodes, five through eight, were released on Christmas Day – about a month after the first four. They’ve definitely given fans a lot to discuss!

A key storyline involved Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) having a heartfelt talk while facing a potentially dangerous situation. Jonathan asked Nancy not to marry him, and she agreed, even though both confessed they still loved each other, and were visibly upset.

It turned out they weren’t in as much danger as they’d believed, and they made it through the day. However, their relationship might not be so lucky.

Fans were puzzled by a recent event, but the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have now explained what happened and clarified whether it was actually a split.

“That’s a breakup,” Matt Duffer explained to People magazine. “They are broken up.”

It pretty much confirms that Nancy and Jonathan are over, and fans who were hoping they’d get back together might have to face the facts.

Duffer explained the decision to give Nancy her own storyline, saying the writers all agreed she needed to become independent and discover who she is as an individual. He couldn’t recall exactly when they first had the idea, but it felt like the right path for her character.

He explained that it’s rare for people to end up with high school sweethearts. Ross Duffer also characterized their connection as being based on shared hardship, calling it a “trauma bond.”

With only one episode remaining, it’ll be fascinating to see how Stranger Things concludes its story – and what the future holds for Jonathan and Nancy now that they’re both available. We’ll find out in less than a week!

Stranger Things season 5’s finale will be released on New Year’s Day.
