After a long wait, the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things* is almost here. The season will be released in multiple parts and aims to deliver a grand finale to the story that began almost ten years ago. Because of the complex plot – which needs to resolve many character storylines and the conflict with the Upside Down – it was expected that the episodes would be longer than usual. Recent reports suggested run times between 90 and 120 minutes, and now co-creator Ross Duffer has confirmed this.
Duffer shared a quick video on Instagram showing the exact lengths of the first four episodes of the upcoming season, which will be available starting November 26th. You can find the episode runtimes listed below.
- “Chapter One: The Crawl” – 68 minutes
- “Chapter Two: The Vanishing of…” – 54 minutes
- “Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap” – 66 minutes
- “Chapter Four: Sorcerer” – 83 minutes
Why Shorter Stranger Things Episodes Are for the Best
As a huge fan of *Stranger Things*, I was a little worried when I heard Season 5 would have eight episodes ranging from 90 to 120 minutes each – that’s a big commitment! Honestly, I think most of us will be relieved that the first few episodes are a bit shorter. With all four dropping at once, everyone’s going to want to binge them, and it would have been tough to do that if each one was almost a full-length movie, especially with the holidays coming up and people traveling. These shorter runtimes make it way more manageable – I can definitely see myself knocking out a couple in a day, and even if I pace myself, fitting in an hour of TV is a lot easier than two.
This approach also helps avoid unnecessary scenes that slow down the story. While some long movies manage to stay engaging, it’s good that the creators of *Stranger Things* need to be concise with each episode. Most episodes are around an hour long, with only one nearing 90 minutes. This should mean that every scene either moves the plot forward or helps develop the characters in a significant way. If they were aiming for two-hour episodes, there would be a risk of the story feeling stretched out and losing momentum.
It will be interesting to see how long the episodes are in the second part of *Stranger Things* Season 5. The show has previously had episodes that were almost like full-length movies. The Season 4 finale was two and a half hours long, and the final episode of the series might be similar in length. However, these longer episodes should be saved for important moments, like the finale, to make them feel more special. If the first episode of the season was as long as the finale, the impact of the longer episodes might be lost.
As a fan, I’m really happy with how long the episodes are in Season 5! Just over an hour feels like the perfect amount of time to really develop the characters and story – things don’t feel rushed at all. We saw with *Peacemaker* Season 2 that shorter episodes can be frustrating, so the creators definitely made a smart choice finding a good balance. I’m hoping they use this time to give us a fantastic start to the season!
