With the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things now released, viewers are closely examining every detail, particularly the two-hour finale. The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have begun explaining some of those details and sharing behind-the-scenes information. While they’ve been hesitant to discuss potential spinoffs, they have confirmed that one proposed spinoff will not be happening.
I was so intrigued when I noticed the Montauk reference in Hopper and Joyce’s proposal scene! Apparently, it was Ross’s idea, as Matt Duffer explained in an interview. But, thankfully, they clarified that there aren’t any plans for a spin-off series set there. Matt actually thought it was a sweet addition, and I agree – it was a nice touch! They really emphasized that this is where the story of these characters concludes, which is a little bittersweet, but good to know.
The Duffer Brothers Reveal What Montauk Is Actually Referencing

As a big fan, I immediately noticed the Montauk mention – it felt like a little wink from the creators! Apparently, the show was originally supposed to be set in Montauk, not Hawkins. So Hopper talking about potentially getting work there isn’t just a throwaway line; it’s a fun callback to the show’s early days, and honestly, a really sweet hint that Hopper and Joyce might finally be getting a fresh start.
The Duffers always intended for the final date to happen at Enzo’s, and the scene had been in the works for a while. Matt Duffer explained to Tudum that Hopper’s journey, particularly his relationship with Eleven, was emotionally challenging, and they wanted to give him and Joyce a fresh start. David Harbour appreciated the idea of a classic, Dickensian-style ending for his and Joyce’s story. The creators emphasized that they had extensive conversations with the actors to ensure everyone was happy with their characters’ conclusions, which was a priority for them.
Ross Duffer explained that the mention of Montauk—where Hopper received a job offer—was a nod to dedicated fans. The show was initially planned to be set in Montauk, and they wanted to include a subtle reference to that original idea for those who remembered it.
Although a spinoff focusing on the Montauk storyline isn’t moving forward, two other projects are in the works. One is an animated series called Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, set between seasons 2 and 3. The other is a currently untitled show centered around the rock seen in season 5 of the main series, and will explore a completely new story and mythology, separate from the original characters and the Mind Flayer. Ultimately, it’s probably a good thing the Montauk spinoff isn’t happening, as the show ended with the main characters in a positive place, and building a whole series around Hopper and Joyce alone would have been difficult. Luckily, we still have these other spinoffs to anticipate, and there’s always the possibility of a future Stranger Things series with a new cast of characters.
Stranger Things season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
