Even though Stranger Things is finished, the Duffer Brothers are giving us a sneak peek at their next Netflix series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. This is the first project from their new production company, Upside Down Pictures. A recent article includes first-look photos of the cast and gives us a sense of what the show will be like. Check it out below!
What Is Netflix‘s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen About?

The series centers on Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone), who travels with her fiancé, Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco), to his family’s isolated vacation home for their wedding. But things quickly become unsettling. Each episode covers one day leading up to the ceremony, and as strange events pile up, Rachel’s fears and suspicions grow increasingly intense.
Haley Z. Boston, the creator and showrunner of the upcoming series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, previously wrote the Netflix limited series Brand New Cherry Flavor and contributed to Amazon Prime’s Hunters. She describes her new show as a horror take on the experience of getting married, drawing inspiration from classic films like Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie. Matt and Ross Duffer will serve as producers.

The show will definitely deliver on its ominous title, according to Boston. She told EW, “It would be misleading if it didn’t! Every show needs conflict and something going wrong, but what makes this one different is that we’ll keep you guessing about what that bad thing is.”
As a movie and TV fan, I’m really excited about the cast they’ve assembled for this show! Jennifer Jason Leigh is fantastic as Victoria Cunningham, the head of this complicated family, and she’s supported by a great group of actors like Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney, Ted Levine, and Sawyer Fraser. Even Zlatko Burić, who you might recognize from Superman, Wonder Man, makes an appearance. What’s really interesting is that each episode focuses on a single day of the wedding celebrations, and apparently, there’s a clever reason behind that unique structure, according to the creator.

We aimed to make the audience experience the same sense of paranoia and fear as the character Rachel. Even when she wasn’t on screen, we focused on building a feeling of discomfort throughout the show. It’s meant to capture that feeling of entering a new situation – like meeting your partner’s family for the first time – where you’re suddenly thrown into a world you know nothing about.
Growing up, I always had this underlying worry about finding the right life partner and the possibility of making the wrong choice in marriage. As I neared 30 and saw everyone around me getting married, it felt like a natural fit to explore those anxieties about commitment and making the wrong decision through the genre of horror.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen WILL Be A Horror Show

What exactly will scare us in this story? While Boston isn’t sharing details yet, the early images suggest Rachel is in for a truly terrifying experience when the seemingly normal Cunningham family reveals its dark side. This type of horror – where a bride-to-be faces insane challenges while meeting her partner’s family – has become popular, seen in movies like You’re Next, Ready or Not, and The Invitation (2022). The challenge is adapting this fast-paced horror for a longer, limited series format, as the shift from normalcy to madness usually works best in films. However, Boston has a plan to make it work.
Boston remained tight-lipped about the specific threat in the show, but hinted that Rachel’s character believes in a larger, possibly supernatural force at play. The series explores the idea of soulmates – what they are, and whether finding one is a matter of destiny or something people build together. Boston playfully suggested viewers would have to watch to discover the answers themselves.
The new series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, will debut on Netflix on Thursday, March 26th. It’s the first project to come from the deal between the Duffer Brothers’ production company, Upside Down Pictures, and Netflix. Following this limited series, two more shows are planned: a sci-fi mystery called The Boroughs, and an animated Stranger Things spin-off titled Tales from ‘85.
