Stranger Things Creators Reveal Answer To Glaring Season Finale Question

The final episode of Stranger Things aimed to wrap up the series in a way that felt complete, and a key part of that was resolving the show’s biggest unanswered questions. While it largely succeeded, the finale also introduced a few new loose ends. Fortunately, the show’s creators have clarified one particularly puzzling point, which should give fans some much-needed closure regarding an important storyline.

The show’s final episode was actually two parts: a big battle against the Mind Flayer, and then a look at what happened to the characters a year and a half later. Fans noticed that some characters, like the military personnel and Dr. Kay, were in the first part but disappeared in the second. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, recently explained to Collider that these characters didn’t have particularly interesting storylines after the battle, so they weren’t included in the epilogue.

After their last battle, the military essentially shut down operations. As Ross Duffer explained, with no way to access the alternate dimension and Eleven missing, there wasn’t much left for them to do, so they gradually packed up and left.

The Stranger Things Creators Reveal Why Dr. Kay Wasn’t Killed

The military side of the story also focuses on Dr. Kay, the scientist who led the experiments and pursued Eleven throughout the season. When asked about Dr. Kay’s past and whether she was handed over to Dr. Brenner, Ross explained why she wasn’t killed off in the finale.

Ross explained that Kay wasn’t connected to Dr. Brenner, and removing her wouldn’t have solved the underlying problem. He described the situation as dealing with a weed – pull one out, and another will always grow back. Even if they had killed Kay, Eleven would have made the same choice. Ross believed the next person to take Kay’s place could have been even more dangerous, just as Kay was, in some ways, a greater threat than Dr. Brenner or Dr. Owens.

Seeing the military withdraw from Hawkins would have clearly shown that things were changing, but the time jump makes it clear that wasn’t going to happen. It would have been satisfying to see their plan to find Eleven definitively fail, since that decision heavily influenced what Eleven did in the final episode. Now, at least, we understand how everything concluded.
