The final episode of Stranger Things featured the epic showdown with Vecna, taking place in the alternate dimension called The Abyss. The battle unfolded both within The Abyss and inside Vecna’s mind, complicated by a huge Mind Flayer creature. Interestingly, the series’ usual monsters – Demogorgons and Demodogs – were absent. The Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, recently explained why they didn’t include them in the final fight, and some fans might be disappointed by the reason.
The Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, explained to The Wrap what happened to the creatures after the group reached The Abyss. According to Matt, Vecna was completely surprised by their sudden attack on his home ground – something he never anticipated. The creatures are still there, but the Duffers decided against a large-scale battle featuring them. They felt it made more sense for Vecna to confront the group directly, as the Mind Flayer was already a powerful enough threat. He didn’t need to rely on his smaller creatures to help him.

Matt described the planet as huge and empty. He pointed out that in Season 4, Henry explored it and briefly spotted a demo in the distance, but emphasized that it wasn’t home to a large, established demo civilization. They weren’t living in any kind of settlement or community.
Matt Duffer explained the decision to feature fewer Demogorgons this season. He felt they’d been fully explored, especially in the episode ‘Sorcerer,’ and the showrunners wanted to concentrate on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, who hadn’t been prominently featured this season. He referred to this as avoiding ‘demo fatigue.’
The Duffer Brothers Scrapped An Alien Homage From Stranger Things Finale

The Duffer brothers, creators of the show, shared that they had considered a scene inspired by the movie The Abyss for the finale, but ultimately decided against it. Fans of Alien likely would have enjoyed it.
Matt mentioned they once considered a scene where the characters would find a huge field of alien eggs, similar to the movie ‘Aliens.’ He acknowledged that not every idea makes it into the final product and asked if anyone remembered the egg concept.
Ross mentioned that scene only appeared in a longer, unwritten version of the show’s finale. Matt wondered if the characters were originally meant to hatch from the eggs, and Ross confirmed that was the idea.
I really enjoyed my time with The Abyss, though honestly, it felt so huge and desolate that maybe a shorter experience was for the best. I was hoping to see a bit more of the Demogorgons, especially since the Mind Flayer was the main threat – a few appearances before or even during the final fight would have been awesome. But honestly, that final battle was still incredible! I’m not sure adding more monsters would have even improved it, it was already so epic with what they had.
Stranger Things season 5 is streaming on Netflix.
