Although the fifth and final season of Netflix’s popular fantasy horror series, *Stranger Things*, hasn’t been released yet, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are already talking about a future spin-off. While an animated show, *Stranger Things: Tales From ’85*, is in the works, the Duffers have confirmed that a live-action spin-off is also planned, but it will explore a slightly different setting and storyline than the original series.
The creators of *Stranger Things*, Matt and Ross Duffer, recently spoke with *Variety* about the show’s upcoming fifth season and their future plans. They’re moving to Paramount after wrapping up at Netflix, describing the change as gaining more creative freedom. While they didn’t reveal many details about the final season, they hinted it will be lengthy and that they’re fully focused on delivering a satisfying conclusion. They also discussed the possibility of expanding the *Stranger Things* universe with a spin-off series.
Matt described their current success as a rare and special moment, admitting they’re unsure if they can recreate it. He also explained they want to avoid making the story unnecessarily complicated with too much backstory. Ross added that any future stories set in the world of *Stranger Things* would likely take place in a new direction, but still feel connected to the original show.
Ross explained that while the Duffers will remain very involved creatively, they’re currently working on writing and directing a new project and will help guide it to completion. Once *Stranger Things* concludes, they’ve made a deal with Paramount to start producing films. Naturally, they’ll continue to be involved with *Stranger Things* since they created the show.
‘Deadpool’ Director Shawn Levy Wants to Launch the ‘Stranger Things Universe’ on Netflix
Netflix
Shawn Levy, director of the upcoming *Deadpool & Wolverine* movie, has been involved with *Stranger Things* from the start, directing several episodes. He’s now an executive producer on the show and had input on the spin-off plans. His goal is to create a larger “STU,” or Stranger Things Universe – and that’s what we’ll call it.
The creators have been careful about discussing potential spin-offs, and I get why they want to protect the core story and characters. I’m really excited about continuing the *Stranger Things* story, but I don’t want to call it a ‘universe’ – that feels overdone. Oh, and I probably shouldn’t have mentioned ‘STU’… I knew someone would pick up on that!
It’s only natural that Netflix would want to continue the *Stranger Things* story. The show has a huge and dedicated fanbase who have consistently demonstrated their willingness to wait for new seasons. According to Matt, Netflix has been understanding throughout the process, though he feels their patience is starting to wane now that the show is ending.
I got a strong sense at the Netflix event that they’re definitely not done with the world of *Stranger Things*. Bela Bajaria, their Chief Content Officer, basically said she’d welcome more of the show anytime the creators are ready. Everyone’s buzzing about a spin-off, and honestly, it feels inevitable. Though, how well the final season is received will probably play a big part in deciding if and when that happens.
