Dacre Montgomery became well-known for his role as Billy Hargrove on Stranger Things, but he doesn’t seem interested in joining major superhero franchises like Marvel or DC anytime soon. Now that Stranger Things has finished its fifth season, fans are curious about what the cast will do next. Several of the show’s stars have already moved on to other projects: Joe Keery’s film Cold Storage was released in February, Jamie Campbell Bower is working on Season 3 of The Rings of Power, and Sadie Sink will be in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Finn Wolfhard isn’t the only star from Stranger Things to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sparking speculation about which other actors might appear in big superhero films. Bryan Cairns from ComicBook recently interviewed Dacre Montgomery, who was promoting his new horror movie, Faces of Death. When asked if he’d consider auditioning for a superhero role like his fellow Australian actors Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman, Montgomery said he’s currently more focused on independent films.
I started my career playing the Red Power Ranger, but I’m really drawn to independent films now. I enjoy having more creative freedom and being involved in the filmmaking process beyond just acting. Plus, I prefer projects that use practical effects over CGI – I think they’re more effective and enjoyable to work on.
Montgomery spoke highly of both Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman, acknowledging their successful careers. However, he pointed out that every actor’s journey is unique, and it sounds like he doesn’t anticipate following a similar path into large, action-focused franchises.
Everyone has their own unique strengths, but when it comes to action movies, the long, continuous shots Chris did in the Extraction films are incredible. I personally know Hugh and he’s a really great guy. He’s always been a fantastic action star – like his role as Wolverine – and he consistently pushes himself to deliver his best performance, as he did with Les Misérables.
Look, I get why people ask about Montgomery doing superhero movies, but he’s made it clear he’s still a huge fan of the genre! He just doesn’t feel like those roles are his path right now. He believes any acting role, even a superhero one, takes real skill and dedication, but he’s looking for projects where he can really contribute creatively and have more freedom to shape his character and the story. It sounds like he wants to be truly involved, not just wear a costume.
He pointed out that performing takes courage, no matter the role. He personally hasn’t been interested in superhero projects, but it’s not because he dislikes them. Surprisingly, he finds he has more creative freedom on lower-budget films, where actors and directors often have more control, than on big-budget blockbusters. That’s what really appeals to him – the ability to play and experiment.
Dacre Montgomery’s Answer Isn’t That Surprising

It makes sense that Montgomery is now focusing on independent films. After his time on Stranger Things, he intentionally took a couple of years off to decide what he wanted to do next. He’d always dreamed of working on smaller, artistic films, and this break allowed him to pursue that. We’re now seeing that vision come to life with projects like Went Up the Hill, What We Hide, and Dead Man’s Wire – all low-profile indie movies. He’ll add another to the list with Faces of Death, which comes out on April 10th. Fans of Billy Hargrove from Stranger Things might want to check out this new horror film.
