I just heard some exciting news! Courteney Cox, who we all know and love from Friends, is going to be directing a movie! It’s based on that wild true crime documentary on Netflix, Evil Genius – the one about that incredibly twisted bank heist. I’m really intrigued to see what she does with this material; it’s a far cry from Central Perk, that’s for sure!
The 2018 documentary series tells the story of Brian Wells, who died in 2003 in a bizarre and highly publicized incident. He was forced to wear a bomb locked around his neck, leading to the case being known as the “pizza bomber” or “collar bomb” investigation.
Honestly, the case wasn’t just strange – it became truly unbelievable when the FBI started peeling back the layers and discovered a much larger conspiracy. They actually called it one of the most complicated and bizarre cases they’d ever seen, and after seeing the details, I can definitely understand why. It felt less like a crime and more like something ripped from a movie script!
It’s no surprise that a movie adaptation is in the works, and it will star David Harbour from Stranger Things alongside Patricia Arquette.
We don’t know for sure who will play which character yet, but it’s possible Harbour will be Wells or Kenneth Barnes. Arquette could play Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, as they were all connected to a 2007 crime.

The cast also includes Michael Chernus, Garrett Dillahunt, Danielle Macdonald, Tom McCarthy, Gregory Alan Williams, Ryan Eggold, Owen Teague, and Harlow Jane.
When the film was announced, Cox shared in a statement (according to Deadline) that she’d been captivated by Evil Genius ever since watching the documentary.
Okay, so this movie… it’s really something else. It feels so bizarre and unexpected, like a true story you wouldn’t believe. I found myself laughing at times, but then genuinely moved by the characters and their struggles. It’s essentially a story about love and isolation, how easily people can be taken advantage of, and how ordinary folks can get caught up in events way beyond their control. It really stuck with me.
Courteney Cox is well-known for her roles in popular shows like Friends and Cougar Town, as well as the Scream movies. She’s also worked behind the camera as a director, with credits including TalhotBlond and Just Before I Go. She and her ex-husband, David Arquette, used to co-own a production company, along with his sister, Patricia.
Patricia Arquette currently stars as Maggie Murtaugh in the series Murdaugh: Death in the Family, after previously appearing in Severance.
David Harbour, recently in the spotlight thanks to his ex-wife Lily Allen’s new album, will return as Jim Hopper in the final season of Stranger Things. Fans are eagerly awaiting the last episodes, which will be released in three parts, to see what happens to their favorite characters.
Filming for The Evil Genius is now happening in New Jersey. In addition to acting, Cox is also producing the movie with Jason Bateman (from Ozark), Michael Costigan, and John Buderwitz through their production company, Aggregate Films.
