Last year, the final season of Stranger Things concluded, and Netflix made its release a huge cultural moment. The episodes were rolled out in three parts, timed with U.S. holidays, and unusually, the extra-long first episode was shown in movie theaters for a limited time, proving successful at the box office. Even though the show finished almost three months ago, Netflix continues to do things differently to honor its most popular series. Soon, fans will be able to purchase the complete Stranger Things collection on DVD and Blu-ray.
Arrow Video has just announced that you can now pre-order the complete Stranger Things series on Blu-ray and 4K! The 25-disc set comes out on July 28th, and there are two versions available: a standard edition and a deluxe edition. The deluxe version is packed with extras, including a Palace Arcade coin, a Hellfire Club patch and d20, 25 collectible art cards, posters, a map of Hawkins, and a 148-page art book filled with behind-the-scenes concept art and storyboards. You can see more details in Arrow’s announcement video below.
Will Netflix Release More Shows on Physical Media Moving Forward?
While a few Netflix originals have been released on DVD and Blu-ray – like some seasons of Stranger Things as Target exclusives with special packaging – it’s becoming uncommon. This makes sense because Netflix primarily wants people to remain subscribers and watch content on the service. Releasing physical copies reduces that incentive, especially for viewers who only signed up for a few specific shows.
Netflix releasing a special box set for Stranger Things has people wondering if they’ll start selling physical copies of more of their original shows and movies. However, this is likely a one-time thing. Stranger Things was a huge hit and built a massive fanbase, making a collector’s item like this a good fit. Since not all Netflix originals are as popular, don’t expect to see all their content released on Blu-ray or DVD.
The release of the Stranger Things box set suggests Netflix is open to releasing physical copies of shows and movies, but will only do so if they see enough demand. Like their partnership with the Criterion Collection for films like The Irishman and Marriage Story, Netflix might offer physical releases for other popular titles. While Stranger Things is unique, the recent complete series box set for Cobra Kai gives us a sense of what kinds of shows might get this treatment. Generally, long-running shows that have become a big part of pop culture are the most likely candidates.
Even though the main Stranger Things story has finished, the franchise isn’t over yet! Animated spin-offs like Tales from ’85 and other new projects are planned. Fans are now hoping these will also be available on Blu-ray, especially since the recent releases set a good example. Collectors, in particular, would likely want to own all the spin-offs to have a complete Stranger Things collection. If Tales from ’85 and future projects are popular, Netflix might decide to release them on physical discs.
