From the beginning, Stranger Things has been strongest when the main group from Hawkins – affectionately known as “the Party” by fans – worked together. Over the years, the show has often split these characters up, sending Eleven on journeys of her own, and dividing the others across different locations like Russia, California, and Hawkins. As Season 5 progressed, viewers were eagerly hoping to see the whole team – Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, Eleven, and the older teens – finally united against the threats of the Upside Down and Vecna. The first part of the final season briefly delivered on this wish, giving fans the emotional moment they’d been waiting for after nearly a decade.
The Duffer Brothers excel at building suspense, and just when the group finally came back together, things quickly fell apart, sending them scattering across Hawkins and the terrifying Upside Down once again. This pattern of brief hope followed by separation has become a hallmark of the show’s final chapters.
The Party Cannot Seem To Stay in the Same Room for More Than 5 Minutes

Episodes 5 and 6 of Season 5 set the stage for the group to reunite, and Episode 7, “The Bridge,” finally brought it all together. After years of battling monsters and other threats, the entire Hawkins crew connected at the WSQK radio station. For a brief time, they worked as a team to solve the mysteries of the Upside Down. As Dustin pointed out, combined with Dr. Brenner’s notes, the chemistry between the characters—both main and supporting—was fantastic, bringing back the feeling fans had when they first met them in 2016. It wasn’t just about strategy or science; it was about their shared past and the strong connections they’ve built over four seasons of supernatural events. Seeing Eleven and Mike alongside Steve, Nancy, Hopper, Joyce, and the rest of the group—including Mr. Clarke, Kali, and Murray—felt like a long-awaited homecoming for fans.
By the end of Episode 7, the group realized they needed a new plan – either because it was strategically necessary, or simply because coordinating a massive defense against Vecna was too difficult. This led them to split into smaller teams. Max, Lucas, Erica, and Mr. Clarke remained in Hawkins to work from their base. Dustin, Steve, Jonathan, Nancy, Joyce, Will, and Mike traveled to the Upside Down version of the radio station to prepare for Vecna’s attack. Meanwhile, Eleven, Hopper, and Kali were drawn towards the source of the conflict – the Upside Down’s Hawkins Lab – hoping to enter Henry’s mind.
Splitting the characters apart is important for the overall story and the final showdown with Vecna, but it’s frustrating for viewers who want to see the original group work together to finish their quest. This storytelling choice emphasizes how massive and overwhelming Vecna is – he’s a threat that can’t be easily tackled. While it builds tension and excitement, it also postpones the satisfying resolution fans have been anticipating since the season four finale. It’s a bit like constantly being tricked – just when it seems the team will finally unite, something changes and delays their progress.
Everyone is eagerly awaiting the series finale after Part 2 ended with a dramatic cliffhanger, leaving the characters scattered and in danger. The final episode, titled “The Rightside Up,” has a lot riding on it, as it concludes a decade of storytelling. Fans are hoping the Duffer Brothers will deliver on their long-held promise and finally give us a full, all-out battle with the entire group fighting together – and it seems like this epic showdown is being saved for this feature-length finale.
I honestly can’t think of a better time for the final chapter to arrive – December 31st! It feels so fitting to ring in the New Year while watching everything unfold in Hawkins. It’s almost poetic. As we’re all celebrating and watching the ball drop, we’ll be completely gripped, wondering if the Upside Down will finally be defeated and if they can somehow reach Henry again. I’m really hoping the title, ‘The Rightside Up,’ means our favorite characters can finally have a normal life, together, for good. We’ll all be staying up until midnight to find out, won’t we?
