Okay, so we’re nearing the end of this first volume, and honestly, after four episodes, a lot of us are still scratching our heads – especially about what’s going on with Will and Mike. But the good news is Noah Schapp, one of the main stars, has hinted that the finale will finally give us some answers. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how they wrap things up!
In Season 5, Will continues to grapple with understanding his sexuality. The show began exploring his feelings of being different in Season 4, and Season 5 follows his ongoing personal journey. Noah Schnapp recently shared on Watch What Happens Live that the storyline will have a satisfying and genuine resolution, offering a “real, authentic representation.”
In season 5, Will’s feelings for his friend Mike continued to be a central storyline. Early in the season, he witnessed Robin kissing her girlfriend, which led to a candid discussion between them about understanding romantic cues and figuring things out.
Schnapp described the connection between Mike and Will as a genuine portrayal of a queer kid growing up in the 1980s, responding to fan appreciation for their relationship.
I’ve been there – falling for a close friend – and it’s tough when your feelings aren’t returned, or they don’t feel the same way. I won’t give anything away, but I think the show’s creators handled this storyline beautifully.
The actor expressed his satisfaction with how the story concludes for his and another character, and shared his eagerness to watch the final version with the audience.
Will’s Powers Mirror His Journey to Discover Himself
In Season 5, Will learns a lot about who he is, going beyond just discovering his sexuality. The episode “Sorcerer” finally explains that he, too, has powers – abilities that are similar to Eleven’s, and which allow him to protect his friends from the demogorgons.
As a fan, I’ve been really moved by Will’s story, and Matt Duffer, one of the show’s creators, explained it beautifully. He said Will’s developing powers weren’t just about magic, but a way of showing him finally understanding and accepting who he truly is. It’s like to become his strongest self, he had to come to terms with his identity, and they cleverly linked that inner journey to his supernatural abilities. It just makes his arc so much more powerful and meaningful!
Finn Wolfhard, who plays Will Byers, believes people often confuse fear with weakness. He explained that Will has faced many frightening experiences, but that doesn’t make him weak. Will consistently bounces back and remains resilient, and Wolfhard feels that’s actually where his strength lies, ultimately demonstrating it through his actions.
Stranger Things Vol. 2 returns on Dec. 25.
