Stranger Things Officially Broke A Streaming Record By A Billion Minutes Streamed

The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 has become a massive hit, breaking streaming records with its debut on Thanksgiving, November 26th. Netflix reports the new season earned 8.46 billion viewing minutes – that’s 140 million hours – over the Thanksgiving weekend, establishing a new high for streaming viewership.

During its first week (November 23rd to 30th), the new season of Stranger Things was watched globally for a total of 284.2 million hours. This means the four released episodes were viewed 59.6 million times. In comparison, the new series Landman on Paramount+ came in second place that week, with viewers watching 1,343 minutes of the show compared to 8,460 minutes for Stranger Things Season 5.

So far, Netflix has every reason to feel good about how much money they’ve put into the final season of Stranger Things.

How Big of A Record Is Stranger Things 5 Setting?

Season 5 of Stranger Things was a massive hit, breaking streaming records with over 1 billion minutes of viewership. This is significantly higher than any other top show, and even surpasses the previous record held by Stranger Things itself – 7.2 billion minutes watched during the Season 4 release in 2022, which was a major cultural moment.

Season 5 of Stranger Things wasn’t the only thing people were watching! While it accounted for 8.46 billion viewing minutes, that was only 57% of the total. The other 43% came from viewers revisiting earlier seasons before watching the new one. Notably, the show particularly resonated with adults aged 18-49, making up 59% of its audience – the highest percentage for that age group of any top 10 movie or show on Netflix that week.

Stranger Things 5 Will Break More Records Before It Ends

It’s surprising to think that Stranger Things Season 5 is only just beginning! Netflix plans to release the final season in three parts: the first around Thanksgiving, the second at Christmas, and the last on New Year’s Eve.

The initial response to the Thanksgiving release suggests the Christmas and final episodes will be much more popular. With more people having time off, and greater attention focused on these crucial episodes, we can expect a significant increase in viewership. This is especially true considering the major plot twists and character developments expected – including heartbreaking losses and escalating stakes – which will make the finale unmissable.
