It’s disappointing that we won’t get to see the Duffer brothers’ initial idea for a Stranger Things spin-off following the show’s emotional finale, “The Rightside Up.” Stranger Things debuted on Netflix in 2016 and quickly became one of the platform’s biggest and most impactful hits. The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, drew inspiration from the Montauk Project conspiracy theory – the series was originally called Montauk and planned to be set in Long Island – and their original notes might actually hint at where the story could go next.
I was digging around online and stumbled upon the original series bible for what eventually became Stranger Things – back when it was called Montauk! It’s fascinating to see the Duffer brothers’ early plans. They always envisioned more than just one season, it seems. The bible, shared on Instagram, shows they intended to revisit those kids ten years later, showing what happened to them as they grew up. With everyone now buzzing about potential Stranger Things spinoffs, it makes me wonder if we might actually see that future storyline come to life, catching up with Eleven, Mike, and the gang in a brand new decade.
What Spinoffs Has Stranger Things Season 5 Set Up?

After Stranger Things concludes, the Duffer brothers are planning at least one spinoff series—and possibly more. However, these new shows won’t follow the original characters from Hawkins. Instead, they’ll feature completely new characters, locations, and storylines. This means a previously considered continuation of the Montauk project—which would have shown what happened to Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will in the 1990s—won’t be moving forward.
Despite the main story ending with season 5, the creators of Stranger Things and Netflix are already planning potential spinoffs. One idea involves exploring the origins hinted at with Hopper’s mention of Montauk, though the creators haven’t confirmed this. Other possibilities include following the adventures of the younger characters like Holly Wheeler and Derek, or revisiting Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin, who plan to stay in touch. There’s also a chance Eleven’s story isn’t over, especially if Mike’s suggestion that she pretended to die is true.
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, have shared a few details about a new spinoff series. It will focus on the strange stone Henry Creel discovered during a flashback, and the events surrounding it. This stone was sought after by a Soviet spy, but Creel killed the spy and took the stone for himself. This act sent him to a mysterious dimension called the Abyss, altered his DNA, and ultimately turned him into the host for the Mind Flayer. This backstory is a great starting point for a new show, allowing the creators to delve deeper into the lore of the Abyss, Vecna, and the Mind Flayer with a fresh cast of characters and a different time period. Fans are hopeful that this will be the first of many Stranger Things spinoffs in the future.
