Stranger Things Season 5 Confirms Major Duffer Brothers Episode Change After Breaking Series-Long Tradition

The creators of Stranger Things, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer (known as The Duffer Brothers), are changing their usual pattern for the final season. They’ve always written and directed the first and last episodes of each season, but they’re deviating from that tradition with the upcoming fifth and final season of the Netflix sci-fi horror series.

Recently, Deadline was at the premiere of Stranger Things season 5 and spoke with executive producer Shawn Levy. He usually directs episodes three and four of each season, but he couldn’t do so for the final season because he was busy working on the popular movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

Despite everything, he was still able to direct two episodes of the fifth season. He directed episode 6 on his own and co-directed episode 7, “The Bridge,” with the creators of Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers. This is the first time the Duffer Brothers have shared directing duties with someone else on an episode of the show.

Levy shared with Deadline that co-directing with The Duffer Brothers “felt like a perfect way to celebrate the close relationship we’ve built over time.”

It’s not surprising The Duffer Brothers chose Levy to direct, as he’s played a key role in the show’s development. He’s also the only other director, besides the Brothers themselves, who worked on the first season – they directed every episode except for the third and fourth.

It’s a perfect way to end Stranger Things. But it’s a little surprising that the three of them are working together on the next-to-last episode (airing December 25th) instead of the very last one (premiering December 31st), which will conclude the series.

There are a few possible explanations for this. Perhaps Levy’s busy schedule played a role. Also, this might not be the last time the three of them work together on something related to Stranger Things. Even though season 5 will conclude the main story, several spin-off shows are planned, set at different times within the same world.

The next-to-last episode of Stranger Things likely involved the most teamwork, as everyone worked hard to prepare for the series’ final events and storylines.

The title “The Bridge” feels fitting because this episode acts as a connection between everything that’s happened in Stranger Things so far and the big conclusion, which will be released in movie theaters and on Netflix at the same time. The episode carries a lot of anticipation as it sets up the finale.
