Last night, Netflix gave fans a sneak peek at the first five minutes of the fifth and final season of ‘Stranger Things’ during a live online event. Even though the full season isn’t out for three weeks, viewers eagerly tuned in to see what’s next for their favorite characters – Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Eleven. They finally got the answer to a mystery that’s been building for nine years.
The story begins with the disappearance of young Will Byers after a night at his friend Mike’s house, following a game of Dungeons & Dragons. This sets off a chain of events in the town of Hawkins, Indiana, involving a dangerous alternate dimension called the Upside Down, terrifying monsters like the Demogorgon, and a mysterious villain named Vecna. While the show revealed Vecna’s connection to Eleven in Season 4, the mystery of what happened to Will when he was trapped in the Upside Down remained unsolved since the series started in 2016. The opening of Season 5 finally provides the answers fans have been waiting for.
The clip starts with a new look back at Will Byers from the first season of Stranger Things. We see him hiding in his treehouse in the terrifying Upside Down. A Demogorgon quickly forces him out, captures him, and drags him into a cave. Once inside, Will is tied up when Vecna appears. Vecna says, “At long last, we can begin,” and explains that he and Will will work together. Then, a tentacle-like growth enters Will’s mouth and begins injecting something into him.
As of today, it’s still uncertain whether that scene was a dream or if it supports a popular fan theory about the show’s events. The series established that Will remained linked to the Upside Down even after being saved. Most viewers assumed this connection was due to the Mindflayer, and even after Vecna’s introduction in Season 4, few considered Vecna might be the source – though some theories suggest this is the case.
Don’t expect all the loose ends of Stranger Things to be perfectly resolved when Season 5 is released. The first four episodes arrive on November 26th, with the next three coming almost a month later on December 25th. The final episode will premiere on Netflix December 31st.
