Viewers have long been curious about the strange, alternate world featured in Stranger Things – often called the Upside Down. Over the years, both the show’s creators and fans have come up with different ideas about what it is – could it be another dimension, a separate world, or even a wormhole? The latest season, Volume 2, finally confirms that at least one of these theories is correct.
In the weeks leading up to the premiere of Stranger Things’ fifth season, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, dropped several clues about what fans could expect. They’ve said a major focus was finally explaining the mystery of the Upside Down, something they’d been building towards for multiple seasons. This suggests they either had the answer planned from the start, or knew they’d eventually need a solid explanation. The latest season indicates that the true nature of the Upside Down was likely carefully considered as early as Season 4.
What Is the Upside Down in Stranger Things?
In Season 5, Episode 5, titled “Shock Jock,” Dustin discovers a journal belonging to Dr. Brenner and a strange drawing inside the Upside Down’s Hawkins Lab. The following episode, “Escape from Camazotz,” begins with Dustin urgently telling Steve what he’s realized: it’s not just another dimension. He explains it’s a wormhole – a connection between two different places and times.
In Stranger Things, a connection exists between our world and another dimension, often called Dimension X. This is the home of creatures like the Mind Flayer and demogorgons, and where Eleven banished Henry Creel as a child. He’s been recovering there, using the Upside Down as a pathway to reach it.
Just to be clear, these creatures aren’t from the Upside Down. They’re visitors who came through when a gateway from another dimension—Dimension X—opened. Dustin also points out that what they thought was a shield generator keeping Vecna’s barrier up isn’t quite that, but it is working as one. The strange object floating above Hawkins Lab is actually a powerful, unique energy source – it’s what’s holding the barrier between dimensions stable. If this energy is disrupted, the barrier will fall, and everything inside the Upside Down will be pulled into a void of nothingness.
As a huge fan, I felt the show played it a little too safe when showing what could happen if Vecna broke through. It was good to see Hopper, Kali, and Eleven were okay, and that Nancy and Jonathan made it through the chaos, but honestly, that little glimpse felt small compared to the scale of what Vecna’s really planning. That small breach was just a taste of something much bigger and far more terrifying, and it’s clear defeating him won’t be simple at all.
Stranger Things’ Wormhole Can Be the Key to Defeating Vecna
Steve devises a risky plan to finally defeat Vecna and permanently close the gates to the Upside Down. It has an equal chance of success or failure. The strategy involves letting Vecna attempt to merge his dimension with ours and destroy the world, but stopping him at the last possible moment. Eleven and Kali will then enter Vecna’s mind to kill him, while Dustin and the others detonate a bomb to obliterate the Upside Down and all of its creatures.
If the heroes succeed, the wormhole will probably be closed, which would defeat Vecna and eliminate the Upside Down forever. However, everyone needs to get back to the real world before that happens, or they’ll be destroyed along with him. As this is the final episode, the creators might choose to show some characters making ultimate sacrifices to emphasize how hard it is to defeat such a powerful enemy.

Before the story concludes, Stranger Things still needs to explain a few mysteries. Why is the Upside Down frozen on a single day? Did the Upside Down originate on that day, and if so, how? Plus, where exactly in time is Dimension X? The series finale is over two hours long, which should provide enough time to permanently close the portal to the Upside Down and finally reveal why the day Will disappeared is so crucial to Vecna’s plan.
You can now watch the final part of Stranger Things Season 5 on Netflix. The last episodes became available on December 31st.
