Stranger Things Season 5: Why Henry Fears the Cave Explained

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first part of Stranger Things season 5 and the play, The First Shadow. After the release of the first four episodes of Stranger Things 5 last week, viewers have been puzzled by Vecna’s (formerly Henry Creel/One) visibly frightened reaction to a specific cave shown in episode 4. These initial episodes, making up Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, were full of unexpected moments.

The first part of Stranger Things season 5 delivered an exciting finale, revealing Will’s developing abilities. It also brought Max back into the story in a surprising way. Instead of remaining in a coma, she appeared within Henry’s memories, actively helping Holly uncover the truth about Henry and his plans.

The story revealed that Max escaped from Henry, who was relentlessly pursuing her like in a horror film, by hiding in a cave he refused to enter. This immediately suggested a larger mystery, especially considering how strongly Henry reacted, leaving us to wonder: what is it about this cave that frightens him so much?

Henry Refuses To Follow Max Into The Cave During Stranger Things Season 5

The scene where Henry chases Max is unsettling for several reasons. Henry looks particularly frightening – arguably his most terrifying appearance so far when he’s in his human form. He has Vecna’s hand and blood on his clothes, but otherwise appears normal, similar to how he looked in the Hawkins Lab.

The truly disturbing thing about this moment isn’t the cave itself, but how Henry responds to it. He’s not just scared—he’s completely terrified, showing fear we’ve never seen from him before, with wide eyes and trembling lips. The reason for this intense reaction is revealed in the Stranger Things prequel play, The First Shadow.

Stranger Things’ First Shadow Play Explains Why Henry Is Afraid Of The Cave

I’m a huge fan of Stranger Things, and while the Duffer Brothers say you don’t need to watch The First Shadow to understand the final season, I definitely think it adds a lot! It really clarifies things, especially the mystery surrounding that cave. The prequel actually showed us how the cave connects to everything – it revealed that’s where Henry first encountered the Mind Flayer, which is a crucial piece of the puzzle!

Henry’s reaction to the cave wasn’t simply fear – it seems to be a deep, traumatic response. This hints at a more complex backstory for him, suggesting he was also a victim of a dark force that twisted him, much like Will. While Henry was always unusual, perhaps he’s not entirely to blame for who he became; maybe he’s been misunderstood all along.

What The Cave Means For Vecna’s Story In The Rest Of Stranger Things Season 5

As a huge Stranger Things fan, I’m completely fascinated by this new cave discovery! For a long time, we all thought Vecna was the ultimate villain, especially throughout season 4 and the first part of season 5. But seeing Henry’s reaction to the cave… it’s got me wondering if maybe the Mind Flayer is actually the bigger threat, and Vecna was just a piece of the puzzle all along? It really makes you rethink everything!

The big reveal about Vecna—also known as Henry Creel and One—could happen in the season finale, or potentially in Volume 2, and it will fundamentally change how we understand his character in Stranger Things. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until Christmas Day for the next three episodes to find out—so patience is key!
