Netflix is planning a big rollout for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Building on the success of splitting Season 4 into two parts, they’ll release the last season in three volumes. According to Matt Belloni of Puck, the episodes will premiere in AMC and other theaters on New Year’s Eve, continuing the recently established partnership between Netflix and AMC. Variety previously reported that the Duffer Brothers had initially requested this, but were denied by Netflix executive Bela Bajaria. However, Belloni points out that this happened before current plans were finalized. While the deals aren’t officially confirmed, Puck states that a theatrical release is highly likely to happen.
Stranger Things Finale’s Theatrical Release Is An Easy Win For Netflix
This would be the first time Netflix has ever shown an episode of one of its shows in movie theaters, and it makes sense why they’re considering it. The creators of Stranger Things are eager to make theatrical films – a goal that was part of their new agreement with Paramount – and Netflix is also trying to become a bigger player in the movie theater world. The event would likely be a one-time showing, though it’s unknown if it will happen outside the U.S. Given the excitement surrounding the fifth and final season of Stranger Things after nine years, this would be a huge way to celebrate one of Netflix’s most popular shows.
The final season of Stranger Things is planned to feel like a movie. Reports indicate each episode could cost between $50 and $60 million to produce, and the entire season is expected to be around two hours long. This large scale makes a theatrical release a good fit, offering dedicated fans a chance to experience the series finale in a special way.
Ultimately, the most important thing is that this final season of Stranger Things delivers a great ending. While the big visuals will likely be stunning, the story needs to be emotionally resonant and satisfying – whether people watch it in theaters or stream it on Netflix. Since most viewers will still be watching at home, and this is fundamentally a TV show, it needs to nail the basics to end on a strong note, regardless of where it’s viewed.
