Stranger Things Season 5: Will’s Powers & Vecna Cliffhanger Explained

Be warned, major spoilers follow for the first part of Stranger Things season 5! After building its world for years, Stranger Things is finally revealing Vecna’s master plan. The first volume ends with a huge cliffhanger involving both Vecna and Will Byers. The latest episodes confirm that Jamie Campbell Bower’s character, Vecna, was responsible for Will’s original disappearance into the Upside Down, sending Demogorgons to capture him.

As the first part of Stranger Things season 5 reaches its climax, it’s revealed that Will is one of twelve children Vecna needs to connect to his hive mind. This connection is crucial for Vecna to begin merging the Upside Down with the real world. During a fraught showdown, Vecna explains he targets those with vulnerable minds, making them easier to control. Ultimately, Will uses newly discovered telekinetic abilities to prevent a Demogorgon from attacking Lucas.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Jamie Bower shared his thoughts on the complex relationship between Will and Vecna as Stranger Things heads into its fifth season. Bower, who deeply connects with his characters, admitted he was a little disappointed when Will temporarily halted Vecna’s plans. He explained that he feels so much empathy for the characters he plays, and seeing Vecna stopped, even briefly, was somewhat frustrating for him.

While staying tight-lipped about what’s coming in volume 2 (releasing Christmas Day) and the series finale (debuting on Netflix New Year’s Eve, then in theaters New Year’s Day), Noah Schnapp shared his enthusiasm for how the cliffhanger involving Will and Vecna will impact the story. He emphasized that Will’s powers are directly linked to his connection with Vecna.

It’s really exciting that we now have two opposing forces instead of just one. And as the story unfolds, Will will become even more of a problem than he’s been so far.

Since Vecna was revealed as the one truly responsible for the attacks on Hawkins in Stranger Things, fans have been speculating about his role in Will’s disappearance. Some think Vecna directly kidnapped Will, while others believe he sent creatures like the Demogorgon and Mind Flayer after him. There’s also been discussion about whether Will could be possessed by Vecna again, potentially to be used against Eleven and her friends, leveraging any remaining connection Will has to the Upside Down.

A surprising reveal in the first part of Stranger Things season 5 was that Will Byers actually has telekinetic powers. Previously, he could only sense when Vecna and his forces were near. This isn’t a complete change to the show’s history, though, because Dr. Brenner experimented on subjects – including Eleven – using Henry Creel’s blood, hoping to give them powers.

The season began by revealing Will was forcibly fed something through a strange, organic tube by Vecna when he was first trapped in the Upside Down. This suggests what he ingested wasn’t just Demogorgon eggs, as previously thought. This also helps explain why Will and Eleven seem to have a stronger connection to Vecna and the Upside Down than Kali, despite Kali undergoing similar experiments.

As Stranger Things moves towards its final season, the confirmation that Will has powers is a major advantage in the fight against Vecna. Though he currently shows signs of telekinesis, the second part of the season could reveal he also has mind-reading abilities like Eleven, which would be incredibly useful for rescuing Holly, Max, and the others. Based on recent comments from the actor, it’s clear the long-awaited, large-scale confrontation fans have been hoping for is finally on the horizon.
