Stranger Things Season 5 Writer Admits 1 Series Finale Plot Hole Was “Crazy”

A major plot issue in the final season of Stranger Things was actually anticipated by one of the show’s writers. The ending has been controversial, with viewers questioning things like how quickly Vecna and the Mind Flayer were defeated, what happened to the military, and Eleven’s unclear future. The finale even sparked a fan theory, called #ConformityGate, suggesting a hidden extra episode existed.

Although the final episode of Stranger Things Season 5 hasn’t arrived yet, a behind-the-scenes documentary called One Last Adventure has. The two-hour film explores how the fifth and final season was made, focusing on the work of the crew and offering glimpses into the writing process. One segment discusses the other monsters that live in the Upside Down, and writer Paul Dichter, who wrote Season 5, Episode 4, “Sorcerer,” shares his thoughts.

The Abyss must contain some kind of creatures—a demogorgon, bats, dogs, or something else. It just doesn’t make sense if it’s completely empty, in my opinion.

Matt Duffer, one of the show’s creators, originally thought the idea was good, but his brother and co-creator, Ross, had reservations. He worried about repeating a similar scene with multiple monsters – like the one with the Demogorgons in the MAC-Z earlier in the season. Another writer, Kate Trefry, agreed, cautioning that audiences might get tired of seeing so many monsters, a concern they called “demo-fatigue.” Ultimately, the discussion didn’t lead to a decision at that moment, but they eventually decided to cut the monsters from The Abyss.

Did Stranger Things Make The Wrong Choice By Not Having Demogorgons In The Abyss?

As a fan, one thing that really bothered me about the final showdown with Vecna and the Mind Flayer was how quickly it ended. Honestly, our heroes won a little too easily. It didn’t feel like there were enough real stakes, or that they were truly challenged, especially when you think about how tough those monsters were in earlier fights. I think adding some extra creatures to the battle could have stretched things out, made the victory feel harder-won, and ultimately more satisfying.

It’s understandable why fans are wondering about the Demogorgons. They’ve been a recurring monster since the first season, even playing a key role in a recent reveal about Will Byers’ abilities. The show has also been inconsistent about their strength and weaknesses, and bringing them back could have created similar problems. However, if the Demogorgons weren’t going to appear, it feels strange that the show didn’t offer an explanation. The Duffer brothers told The Wrap that the Demogorgons were present, but Vecna simply didn’t summon them.

The main surprise for Vecna was this unexpected attack on his own territory – he really didn’t see it coming. The team considered having demos join the fight on top of the Mind Flayer battle, but they decided it didn’t make sense. Why would Vecna need a small army when he’s facing such a massive threat and can handle it himself? The planet is vast and empty, as we saw in Season 4 with Henry’s journey. He did spot a demo in the distance at one point, but they aren’t living in a large, established civilization up there.

If you were hoping to see Demogorgons in the finale, this explanation probably won’t satisfy you. Knowing that a writer actually wanted to include them doesn’t really help, though there was a reason for their absence. It’s just a shame that reason wasn’t explained more clearly to viewers.
